Today we lost a friend.
We will cherish the memories that we made with Dave for the rest of our days; he was a fierce competitor on track and a generous bloke who helped many people behind the scenes, without fanfare.
Our love and thoughts go to his kids, Ethan, Riley and Lily, and to his sister Di.
We’re sure he’ll be having a wine with his late brother-in-law Pete tonight, watching the sunset and talking about the latest F1 news.
Until we meet again Dave 🏁

We’ve been a bit slack with our social media updates lately with the huge workload prior to March taking up a large portion of our time.

Here’s some pics of the 6th Ford Kent Race engine we’ve completed this year. A majority of our engine builds are for Formula Ford racing use and most of our customers are based in Australia. This engine is being run in on our Hub/engine Dyno rig dubbed “FrankenRIG”.

This rig allows us to efficiently run in the engine through our Hub Dyno, with the ability to make tuning adjustments quickly and easily. We no longer need the engine to be fitted into a racecar which makes life easier for us. It takes us around 30 minutes to install the engine into the rig and an oil change can be done in under 2 minutes with our quick drain setup. We’ve found this highly beneficial and gives us comfort knowing every engine is properly run in, tuned and run up to maximum RPM prior to vehicle install 😁

Another Kent engine revived ✅

Something a little different this time. This one is for a Ford Es**rt road car which features a factory wet sump and oiling system, unlike most of our race engines.

This engine was built to be a drivable yet lively little 1600cc Kent with good manners and fuel economy. A well ported cylinder head and all our regular race preparation delivered a neat 109hp at the flywheel with an ultra flat power curve. Ignition and valve timing were all optimised for an early torque curve and we were stoked with how she barks from low rpm.

Our hub Dyno and engine development rig dubbed “frankenrig” made tuning something like this achievable and simple.

We had five of these “Road GT” camshafts made for future projects, get in touch with us if you’re interested 😁

Sandown historics 2024, proudly presented by Equity One

Over the weekend we participated in the 32nd annual “Sandown Historic” event, this year presented by the lovely folks at Equity-One.

Across the weekend we maintained a cross section of Historic Vehicles with a 1964 McLaren M1A V8 Sports car, a 1981 Ralt RT4 Cosworth Formula Atlantic, a 1989 Van Diemen Formula Ford and a 1984 Swift DB1 Formula Ford.

Dean Koutsoumidis was a busy man over the weekend, juggling his driver duties with work commitments seamlessly. This weekend Dean was racing in his beautiful "Juliette", a Van Diemen RF89 that he has owned for now 2 years. He was operating at a high level, setting new PB’s and fighting the leaders on a regular basis. Besides his driving going so well, he and the VHRR did an amazing job across the weekend at bringing new people into the sport, through his Equity One hospitality marquee. The smiles were contagious and the family friendly atmosphere was ideal for all ages and backgrounds.

Our next event is down at Phillip Island for the Island Magic event on the 22nd to 24th of November, our last event of the 2024 season 🏁

Nick McBride was in his brand new Swift FB89 on Friday and we shook the car down for the first time on Friday morning. This Formula Ford hasn’t been on track for many years and has just received an extensive birthday after being imported from the UK. We had a strange noise appear in the last session on Friday so we went back to the workshop and dragged out his backup car for the remainder of the weekend, his trusty Swift DB1. Nick jumped straight into the DB1 and Qualified 3rd on Saturday morning, set 2 new lap records across the races and would have likely won the final race until a scuffle on the last lap into turn 1 sent him into a high speed spin. Nick finished the weekend with a new Historic Formula Ford lap record of 1.20.2 around the famed Sandown Raceway.

Luke Warwick decided to park his Swift Formula Ford for the weekend and instead drag out the mighty McLaren M1A previously raced by his Dad, Max. The brutal V8 McLaren was attracting a big crowd in the pits, undeniably one of the prettiest cars in attendance. The car was deemed a little too loud by officials over the first two races (we totally understand) and breached the noise regulation for the event on multiple occasions. Over the last race we kept it just under the limit and Luke finished 4th outright in a healthy grid of cars. Many spectators visited the garage and commented on how amazing the sound was, an ironic circumstance given we spent most of the weekend trying to tinker with mufflers and lower the decibel output.

Alex Davison was behind the wheel of the Ralt RT4 which his Dad (Richard) had previously raced at the famed Australian Grand Prix at Calder Park against Formula 1 world champions such as Niki Lauda and Keke Rosberg in 1984 (and various other years). The Ralt has been retained by Richard for decades and received a ground up rebuild just before the Covid shutdowns in 2020. This weekend was a big milestone for everyone involved as it was the first time that the car has run cleanly since it’s rebuild, with a range of frustrating and bizzare carburettor issues hampering any progress to date. Alex demonstrated his ability and won 2 out of 3 races across the weekend despite racing against cars with substantial pace advantages, the class having a combined grid with many newer vehicles with big horsepower. We were thrilled to see the car being pushed and look forward to refining it further.

Morgan Park Historics

Over the weekend Luke and Byron flew up to Queensland to help out Andrew Torti in his beautiful 06b Spectrum, a car that has been racing in Victoria for the last decade or so.

Andrew was competing at the Morgan Park Historics to learn the track in preparation for the Formula Ford Kent Nationals in a few weeks time. The weather was lovely and the car ran flawlessly, Andrew claiming 2 race wins and a pole position in his class.

Sun, rain, wind and a Championship 1-2 ✅

----

Our team was down at Phillip Island over the weekend for the final round of the Victorian Formula Ford championship.

We fielded two drivers in the Kent (FF1600) class, Richard Davison and Andrew Torti. Friday Practice was difficult as the Island provided us with some patchy winds all day. Despite less than ideal track conditions, both of our drivers hovered around their PB lap times.

Saturday Morning gave us a small window of dry running for Qualifying, with Richard claiming yet another dominant Pole Position and Andrew slotting in 3rd.

Race 1 kicked off in the afternoon, about 10 minutes after a torrential downpour. The standing water was so bad that the race started under safety car conditions. Richard drove away from the front to win the race, with Andrew bringing his Spectrum home in 3rd amidst a dense spray, both drivers doing an amazing job to keep the cars unscathed in horrendous conditions.

Race 2 on Sunday morning meant both drivers just had to finish to lock in a 1-2 in the State Championship. Just before the race commenced another rain cloud hit, this time a regular race start was performed. Richard had a great launch and led from start to finish to wrap up the 2024 Championship in style, his 13th race win of the season.
Andrew was lapping at a rapid pace in the early laps, but when the rain rolled in he used fantastic judgement to bring the car over the line with a finish (4th place), securing himself 2nd in the 2024 championship.

For Race 3 we momentarily had the sun out and no Championship to consider. Richard had a poor getaway due to a gamble on gear ratios, expecting to have an advantage later in the race. Andrew took off like a rocket and commanded the race from the lead, a 5 car train followed him. With Richard moving forwards in the pack we were all set for a blockbuster finish until a safety car was deployed for a crash at turn 2. While the affected drivers walked away it meant the race finished under safety car, giving Andrew a well deserved race win and Richard capping off the season with a podium finish in 3rd.

We would like to thank all of our amazing Drivers, mechanics and suppliers for allowing us to win our 7th Championship as a team and our 3rd Championship as an engine builder.

Combined, our drivers have won over 20 races this year using our engines, something we are hugely proud of.

A huge congratulations goes out to Richard Davison and Andrew Torti for their stellar season of Victorian State racing.

We now head north for some racing in QLD in the coming months, along with a trip to South Australia. Stay posted 😁🏁

Check out these fantastic images from Sandown, Round 4 of the Victorian Formula Ford Championship.

Richard Davison put his RF95 Van Diemen on pole position just ahead of Andrew Torti in his Spectrum 06b. Both drivers were lightning fast all weekend and pushed each other forward from the moment the cars rolled out of the truck.

The cool thing for us as a team was to watch our two drivers fighting each other for race wins with a healthy margin to the cars behind. Apart from Andrew having a driveshaft break on the final lap of Race 1, our weekend was perfect, Richard was in very good form and extended his Championship lead with another Round win. Andrew had his best weekend to date and claimed his first ever circuit race win on Sunday.

Dean Koutsoumidis also joined us in his RF89 Van Diemen for the Friday practice, getting some more laps under his belt at Sandown ahead of Historic Sandown later in the year.

We might seem fairly quiet on our socials as we continue pushing hard in the workshop on a wide range of builds, from restoration work to race engines and all the vehicle prep between events.

Thank you to Phil Wisewould for the shots trackside supplied to Formula Ford Australia 🙏

We’ve just returned home from a fantastic weekend of racing at Winton Raceway for the 2024 Winton Festival of Speed, proudly sponsored this year by Equity One.

We fielded a total of 4 Historic Formula Ford race cars and a beautiful McLaren M1A.

Nick McBride was driving his Swift DB1 in the highly competitive Formula Ford grid and demonstrated his ability with a clean sweep of wins (all 3 races). So far this year Nick has won every race he has started in the category with 8 wins on the trot.

Dean Koutsoumidis was steering his Van Diemen RF89 and put forward the best performance of his Formula Ford career with a brilliant front row start in race 1. Unfortunately it didn’t last long after some contact at turn 11 on lap 1, but the remainder of the weekend was exciting for Dean as he worked back through the field in the remaining races, ultimately finishing the final race in 7th.

Richard Davison was back behind the wheel of the car known as “Pammy” (RF89 Van Diemen) and had nothing short of a shocker. His pace on Friday morning was rapid until an unfortunate argument between valves and pistons ensued towards the end of the last session on Friday. Our crew worked into the evening to install a spare engine and get him out on track for Qualifying, with Richard working his way forward to 7th in the final race before a high speed off at turn 5 meant a DNF to bookmark an unlucky weekend.

Luke Warwick was a busy man over the 3 days, with not only his lovely Swift FB89 Formula Ford on track but also the mighty V8-powered McLaren M1A. Luke had some solid battles in the Swift to finish 13th in the feature race. It was exciting to see the McLaren back on track and pounding around, with many spectators talking about the fantastic sound coming from the alternating collector exhaust system fed by a thumping Windsor V8.

We would like to thank all of our customers, suppliers, and amazingly dedicated trackside mechanics who kept the cars on track through the weekend, staying until curfew each night.

One last shout out goes to Dean and the amazing team at Equity One for sponsoring not only the event, but allowing us to be involved with the Equity One hospitality marquee.
