2005 Honda SP2....great bike
There are two great "F**k You" moments in motorsport.
When Ford stuck it to Ferrari with the F40 and when Honda stuck it to Ducati and the bias shown towards the Japanese manufacturers in the World Superbike Competition with the SP2.
Colin Edwards took the World title aboard one of these beasts, whilst Nicky Hayden dominated the US Championship.
I own 4 of these things and I guess I am a bit of a collector.
I have one of our NSW guys coming along with us on our ride through the Sunshine Coast Hinterland after our Suspension School at the end of August.
Whilst I trust young Jake implicitly....the trust only goes so far.
I have two ZX12rs which are also great bikes. One is registered.
So, I guess Jake gets the ZX12 and I will pull one of the SP2s out of mothballs for the ride.
It will need to registered.
It will be strange to see a maroon and white number plate on one of these bikes but punching one of these things down Moy Pocket Rd has to be "Heaven on a Stick"!
So our ride will now include Moy Pocket Rd and for those who still want to ride after we are done at Ricks Garage......Maleny Stanley River Rd will be waiting.....
The rythmic, dulcid tones of an SP2 with an Arata full system will provide an intoxicating soundtrack...just an added bonus.

Can you please service my forks??? They feel quite soft.....
While you are at it, can you check the head stock bearings?. There seems to be a clunk coming from the front end.
Bad news for this customer.
The damage found inside the fork was extensive. This was due to the cartridge tubes separating and then pounding into each other.
It has been noted that KYB cartridge tubes come apart quite often. But this is usually after they have been serviced.
With the KYBs, shops tend to clamp the cartridge where the upper section meets the lower tubing....it looks like a logical hold point but this is not good....
When you clamp the tubes at the joint, you can literally hear the loctite crack. This will weaken the union and if not addressed will cause future problems.
It's not often we see this with a WP fork.
Here at Shock Treatment, we utilise cartridge holding tools which clamp the lower tube at the seal head ensuring there will be no future problems.
In an effort to make bikes lighter and lighter, material thicknesses are reduced to a minimum. Great for racing but adds additional focus on maintenance.
Bike shops have so many things to concern themselves with.
Take your suspension to a specialist......

The perfect melody......
Jan and I were having a coffee on the verandah at 7.30 when I thought a heard a familiar noise.
She was mid sentence when I said "Shoosh...Shoosh"......women love that!
"What is it"?.....
"Sounds like a YZf250"
"You're an IDIOT"!
8.15 and there is a whole bag of four stroke MX bikes in full song and in perfect harmony, resonating through the Conondale Valley......Green Park is alive!!!
Beautiful!!!!
Old Sachmo himself would struggle to play a nicer tune....

A lot of money for two little cuts......
Someone who had read our post regarding the tube mods on the Africa Twin complained that the price was too high for the upgrade and wanted to know "how I could justify the price".....$120
Well Sir....I really would like to call him something else....
Its all in the set up time.
The base of the tube needs machining and a slight chamfer added so the live centre will engage and be "True"
Then we remove the drill head from the tailstock and install the live centre.
Then we take a piece of delrin and make a resistance fit plug for the 3 jaw so the tube end can be located and be not only secure but "True".
After that we change the tooling to the appropriate tip for "Hard Chrome"
Set the lathe to the correct speed.
Set the crossbed to the appropriate angle and then we can begin cutting.
Two tubes....so 4 cuts. Not to mention that the crossbed has to be turned around and set up in the opposite direction for the second angle.
The end result not only saves your fork tubes worth app $1100 but it provides a performance upgrade that I would value around $500. Pretty good value!
The job is not difficult, but it needs to be precise. If you don't want to pay the price you could always take a fine Bastard file and "Have At It" yourself....

I know we have a lot of tradies riding bikes. I would love to hear your stories of people whinging about price without any concept of the process.

We had a customer today complaining about habitual seal leaks.....
3 seal replacements in quick succession.
The shop that did the seal replacements is clearly not using the correct tools to either hold the tubes or install the seals. Both the chrome tubes have been marked in a very similar fashion.
We often see gouged tubes from where the seals have been installed using a drift or other such means.
Once these tubes receive such damage, the scarring will continue to damage the new seals, causing repeated failures....The tubes need to be re-chromed or replaced.
We also have seen the creation of substandard seal drivers which have crept into the suspension market to appeal to those looking to save a few dollars.
It is to this point that we have had our own seal drivers made in order to ensure that we achieve the best possible outcome from our work.
Funnily enough, most suspension specialists with the correct tools and proper facilities will usually be a lot cheaper than the average bike shop when it comes to fork seal replacement.
Think twice about where you have your forks serviced.

Rider To Bike set ups
We have a unique service here at Shock Treatment that we call a "Rider To Bike" set up.
Basically, you bring your bike into us as well as your riding gear.
We set the sag with you on the bike and then we head to the track for testing. You have a few warm up laps and we observe how the bike and the rider are performing.
The bike is tuned using the standard range of adjustment....compression, rebound, fork height as well as oil height if required.
Quite often if we see that the rider is poorly positioned on the bike or perhaps could make a few changes to get more out of their riding, we will help with this.
All of us here at Shock Treatment are ex racers and long term bike enthusiasts.
Jayden, our A Grade MX rider, is also a registered coach.
This is not a coaching service however, just friendly advice that often proves very valuable.
This service costs $200, takes appr one to one and a half hours and can transform your bikes performance. Not to mention, assisting you in your approach to your riding.
It is also amazing just what we find when setting the bikes up that some riders are not aware of.....incorrect chain tension, worn or dry bearings etc...
