🔧 TD42 PATROL – SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO START AGAIN 🔧
This Patrol originally came into CBT Mechanical for a check-over after previously being converted from ZD30 to TD42 and having a number of performance upgrades fitted.
The customer had been looking for a workshop they could trust to get the vehicle properly sorted, after already having work carried out by a number of different mechanics.
Once we started going through the Patrol, it was pretty clear the vehicle had been through a few hands over the years — and unfortunately, it showed.
Rather than continuing to patch individual problems or bolt more parts onto the existing setup, we recommended stripping it back and doing it properly from the ground up.
By the time we were finished, about the only major component retained from the previous engine fitment and performance setup was the injector pump — and even that had to be removed, resealed and correctly retimed.
With the engine remaining in the chassis, we stripped it back as far as practical and worked our way through the entire vehicle:
🔧 Engine extensively stripped and resealed
🔧 Valve clearances correctly set
🔧 Injector pump removed, resealed and retimed
🔧 New injectors fitted
🔧 New turbo setup
🔧 New intercooler and pipework
🔧 4-inch snorkel and airbox fitted
🔧 Full 3-inch exhaust system fitted
🔧 Cooling system sorted
🔧 Engine bay wiring extensively repaired and tidied
🔧 Accessory wiring removed from inside the vehicle and redone
🔧 Existing accessory looms repaired and corrected
🔧 COMP remote-reservoir suspension fitted
🔧 Adjustable panhard rods fitted
🔧 Heavy-duty steering arms fitted
🔧 Chassis Man IFP steering damper fitted
🔧 Previous fitment and workmanship issues corrected throughout
This wasn’t just an engine repair or another round of performance upgrades. We ended up going right through the vehicle — engine, fuel system, turbo, intake, intercooler, exhaust, electrical, steering and suspension.
A huge amount of the work on this Patrol involved undoing previous modifications and repairs before we could move forward. Some of the biggest jobs are the ones where you can’t simply start fitting new parts — you first have to get everything underneath them back to where it should have been.
There are plenty of hours in a build like this that you’ll never see once everything is back together. But that’s what makes the difference between a vehicle with a collection of performance parts bolted onto it and a properly sorted package where everything works together.
The end result is a TD42 Patrol that’s a very different vehicle to the one that originally rolled into the workshop — and most importantly, the customer now has a vehicle they can enjoy with confidence.
We’d also like to sincerely thank our customers for trusting us with their vehicles and allowing us to be part of their builds — it’s something we never take for granted.
Anyone can bolt parts on. Getting the whole package right is what makes the difference.
