In 1960 Mr Jim Humphrey opened the Golden Fleece service station on the corner of James St and Anzac Ave, which is the current location of Southern Cross Ford Toowoomba. In the 1970s, Jim Humphrey and his sons John, Bruce and Ian had begun to outgrow the service station. The Humphrey family had started to trade in the sale of new and used vehicles, with a fully equipped workshop performing servici
ng and repair work and panel repairs. The Humphrey family operated at the Herries St facility until 1989. Humphrey Motors Toowoomba became the Toowoomba sub agent for Alfa Romeo vehicles. This was a joint venture with John French who was the Brisbane Alfa Romeo dealer. In 1975 Humphrey Motors was one of the very few workshops to have a chassis dynometer. These tools are still used in other workshops to this day, and assist in fine tuning and problem solving engines, and are also used to obtain performance readings and conditions. In 1976 Humphrey Motors became the Toowoomba dealer for Leyland motor vehicles. Both John and Bruce Humphrey were very successful at racing minis for many years. Bruce was club champion in 1972, 1973 and 1974. Ian Humphrey specialised in electronic equipment, such as tachometers, speedos and other instrumentation services found in motor vehicles as well as other equipment such as cameras and hi-fi equipment. The firm down sized and relocated to 32 Water St in 1989 and later moved to 29 Stephen St, where we still operate today. After purchasing the business in June 2019, the current owner Steve and his team rebadged the business as H.M. Mechanical and moved it to bigger premises at 509 South Street Harristown and continue to make the safety of their customers vehicles their number one priority.
