Michael originally started his business as a field service operation - mining belts, gas fields, heavy equipment across Central Queensland.

When he brought the business back to Toowoomba as MS Mechanical, he brought everything he'd learned in those conditions with him. The diagnostic discipline. The attitude that no job is too hard. The American truck market in Australia isn't slowing down.

But the service infrastructure still hasn't caught up. Most workshops don't have the diagnostic software. Most don't have parts connections with international suppliers. Most haven't spent years learning the quirks of a 6.7L Powerstroke or a Duramax.

If fuel prices have you watching the gauge more closely, here are 5 things that directly affect how much diesel your truck is burning through - and that we can actually fix.

▪️Dirty or worn fuel injectors - poor spray pattern means incomplete combustion. More fuel in, less power out.

▪️EGR valve issues - a stuck or clogged EGR forces the engine to work harder than it needs to.

▪️DPF struggling to regenerate - a partially blocked filter creates back pressure that kills efficiency.

▪️Turbo underperforming - if boost pressure is down, the engine compensates by using more fuel.

▪️Air filter and intake restriction - one of the simplest fixes, and one of the most overlooked.

Winter is just around the corner, and cold starts are harder on diesel engines than most people realise.

Here's what we're checking on every American diesel truck this month:
→ Glow plugs - the first thing to show weakness in cold weather
→ Battery health - diesel cranking demands are serious. Over 3 years old? Get it tested. → Coolant condition - not just the level, but whether it's still doing its job
→ Injector seals - small leaks accelerate in the cold. White smoke on start-up is a sign. → Transmission and diff fluids - cold thickens everything and can hide early wear

A pre-winter check now is a lot cheaper than a breakdown in the colder months.

One of the questions we get asked a lot: "Can't I just take my Ram/Ford/Chev to any mechanic?"

Technically, yes. But here's what that often looks like in practice - a generic fault code, parts replaced on a best guess, a bill that doesn't fix the problem, and a truck that ends up with us anyway.

American diesel engines are electronically sophisticated. The diagnostic software matters. The experience with that specific platform matters. Getting it right the first time matters.
