What does a Powerstroke service actually involve?

It's not the same as servicing a Hilux or a Patrol. Here's what a full service on a 6.7L Powerstroke looks like at MS Mechanical:

✔ Oil and filter change (using the correct spec - this matters more than most people know)
✔ Fuel filter service - primary and secondary
✔ Cooling system inspection
✔ Glow plug condition check
✔ DPF condition check via live data
✔ Scan for stored and pending fault codes
✔ Visual inspection of all fluid levels, hoses, and belts

American diesel trucks have a way of ending up with us after a journey through two or three other workshops - each one a little more uncertain than the last.

That's not a criticism of other mechanics. These are genuinely complex engines. The diagnostic software matters. The experience with that specific platform matters.

Most people don't realise how much a failing EGR valve is costing them until it's too late.

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve is designed to reduce emissions - but on American diesel trucks, it's one of the most common causes of:

→ Increased fuel consumption
→ Black smoke under load
→ Rough idling and hesitation
→ Loss of power under tow

A clogged or stuck EGR won't always throw a code early. That's the problem. By the time the light comes on, carbon buildup can already be significant.

We diagnose and service EGR systems on Powerstroke, Duramax and Cummins engines. If your truck doesn't feel right, don't ignore it.

Michael originally started his business as a field service operation - mining belts, gas fields, heavy equipment across Central Queensland.

When he brought the business back to Toowoomba as MS Mechanical, he brought everything he'd learned in those conditions with him. The diagnostic discipline. The attitude that no job is too hard. The understanding that a broken-down vehicle isn't just an inconvenience - it's a real problem for real people.

The American truck market in Australia isn't slowing down.

But the service infrastructure still hasn't caught up. Most workshops don't have the diagnostic software. Most don't have parts connections with international suppliers. Most haven't spent years learning the quirks of a 6.7L Powerstroke or a Duramax.

If fuel prices have you watching the gauge more closely, here are 5 things that directly affect how much diesel your truck is burning through - and that we can actually fix.

▪️Dirty or worn fuel injectors - poor spray pattern means incomplete combustion. More fuel in, less power out.

▪️EGR valve issues - a stuck or clogged EGR forces the engine to work harder than it needs to.

▪️DPF struggling to regenerate - a partially blocked filter creates back pressure that kills efficiency.

▪️Turbo underperforming - if boost pressure is down, the engine compensates by using more fuel.

▪️Air filter and intake restriction - one of the simplest fixes, and one of the most overlooked.
