Cyclone season starts 1 November. If your boat wintered up north, now's the time to bring her home.

Many marine policies change the rules for boats kept in northern waters over summer: higher excess, mooring conditions or cyclone exclusions. Check your PDS or ask your broker before you assume you're covered.

And if she never left Moreton Bay, don't get comfortable. Alfred reached our coast in March 2025. An unattended boat in a summer storm is only as safe as its bilge pumps and the batteries running them.

The run home is also a stress test. Days of motoring put hard hours on alternators, chargers and battery banks, and faults that hid all winter show up now.

On a pre-summer power check I go through:

Battery capacity, cell balance and BMS faults on lithium banks
Alternator, charger and solar settings matched to the chemistry
Shore power inlet and lead for heat damage
Bilge pumps, float switches and their supply

Why do electrical faults become harder to find as a boat gets older?

Because marine electrical problems rarely stay in one place.

Over time, corrosion can work its way into connections. Wiring can deteriorate. Terminals can loosen. Previous repairs can add complexity. Equipment gets replaced, systems are modified, and suddenly a fault that once seemed simple becomes much harder to trace.

One of the biggest mistakes we see is focusing only on the component that has stopped working.

Sometimes the component is not the problem at all.

A pump that will not start could be a connection issue.
A battery that is not performing could be a charging issue.
Electronics that cut out could be caused by a voltage drop.
A recurring fuse failure could be telling you there is a deeper problem.

This is where experience onboard matters.

When we work on a vessel, we look beyond the obvious symptoms and work through the electrical system to understand what is actually happening.

Good fault finding is not about replacing parts until something works.

It is about finding the reason the fault occurred in the first place.

If your boat has an electrical issue that keeps coming back, gets harder to explain, or only appears under certain conditions, it may be time to look deeper.

Sometimes the biggest electrical problem on a boat starts with something that looks almost insignificant.

One loose connection can create resistance. Resistance creates heat. Heat can lead to voltage drops, unreliable equipment, and problems that seem completely unrelated.

The frustrating part is that everything can appear fine while you are at the dock.

Then you head offshore.

A pump slows down. Electronics start behaving differently. A battery system does not perform as expected. Suddenly, you are trying to work out why several things are happening at once.

This is something we see regularly with marine electrical systems. The problem is not always the battery, the charger, or the equipment itself. Sometimes, the real culprit is a connection that was overlooked.

That is why we believe marine electrical work needs to look beyond the obvious.

When we are onboard a vessel, we look at how the system is actually connected and performing. We check the details that can easily be missed because a reliable electrical system is about more than having power.

It is about making sure that power gets where it needs to go safely and consistently.
