East Coast 31 yachts

East Coast 31 yachts It’s on again at The Basin..! Doing the same again in November 2025, so get in touch.

In 2024 these Australian built yachts turned 50, and we held a get-together and BBQ (and a social race) on Pittwater on the weekend of November 23-24th 2024.

Last night a few salty EC31 owners caught up for a chat and parmy at Chatswood!
The common theme was they all love their boats, whether they’ve owned them for thirty-three years or just three months.
Loads of experience here! Have tagged a few people who couldn’t make it last night but we look forward to seeing them at the Basin for the weekend of November 21-22.

This is an open invitation to any East Coast 31 owners we might have missed with our emails…

We’re catching up again for a pub dinner at Chatswood next Tuesday 8th September.

The main topic will be our next annual Pittwater weekend planned for late November.

But it’s also a great forum for picking the brains of experienced sailors with engineering backgrounds who can advise you on all aspects of boat maintenance and repairs.

Please DM me for the details. (Photo is for attention only.)

An early Hood Sails advert featuring one of the first East Coast 31s, Peter Rysdyk’s “Onya of Gosford” (one of many boats with the same name!)
She won the inaugural Gosford to Lord Howe race in 1974, and also competed in the Sydney-Hobart that year as the only EC31.
The same boat, now named “Brief Encounter” has been moored at Balmain for many years, but a new custodian has just bought her and is doing a full restoration.

Stunning winter afternoon racing on the Harbour today. Good breeze and lots of sunshine.
Came 7th out of 11 starters in Div 3 of the RANSA winter series, and a very close finish, with less than three minutes between us and first place on handicap.

A bargain for a brave person with deep pockets and a good ability to get her back into order.

There’s an interesting site all about Half-Tonners which has been created and maintained in France, cataloging various makes and their histories.

It has a page dedicated to the East Coast 31 which is still being added to. Designed by Peter Cole in 1974 and built at East Coast Yachts in Gosford NSW. More photos and info to come.

If your boat is here please let us know if there are any corrections or additions. (See link in comments.)

A photo taken off Balmain in 2023, of two EC31s, “Chauvinist” passing a moored “Brief Encounter” previously raced as “Onya of Gosford” (one of many owned by Peter Rysdyk).

Both had terrific race records in their day.

Would love to make contact with the owner of Chauvinist, so if anyone knows them please DM me. She looks to be well set up in cruise mode these days.

1979 was a good year for the East Coasts in the Sydney to Hobart, placing 4th, 6th and 8th on handicap.

And fourth place was less than six minutes behind first place! So close!

In all, six ECs competed that year alongside 3 of their older Cole 43 sister ships.

“Kalimna” is an excellent condition one-owner East Coast, and has just come onto the market, currently moored in Kettering, Tas.

Extensively outfitted for coastal cruising, she has travelled all over Australia’s East Coast, and especially Tasmania.

A 1988 model, so one of the last few produced, and best!

For sale through Jo Breen at Derwent Boat sales, the link with contact details is below in the comments.
