Two RAMs. Two cams. One very problem.
We’ve got two 5.7L HEMI RAMs in the workshop, both with the same P0308 cylinder 8 misfire, and both showing very similar camshaft and lifter damage.
One has travelled 102,000 km, the other 126,000 km, and in both cases the plugs and coils had already been moved around without the misfire following them.
Once we got further into them, the problem became clear. The camshaft lobes are starting to erode. With corresponding wear and pitting on the lifter rollers. On one engine, we can already see the beginnings of the same damage across multiple lobes.
It doesn’t take a completely destroyed camshaft to log a code either. Once the lobe wears just enough that the valve isn’t opening as far as it should, the ECU can detect the difference and start logging a misfire on the 's. We often see the SRT Jeeps come in with far worse lobe damage and misfire.
So if your 5.7 HEMI RAM has a persistent misfire, don’t immediately throw plugs and coils at it.
Move the plug and coil to another cylinder first. If the misfire stays on the same cylinder, it’s time to start looking deeper.
And if the heads and camshaft have to come out anyway, it’s the perfect opportunity to carry out an delete and replace the affected valvetrain components while we’re in there.
Watch the video to see exactly what this wear looks like before the camshaft is completely chewed out.
