FBT Changes for Electric Vehicles — What You Need to Know

The Federal Government confirmed changes to the FBT exemption for electric vehicles on 5 May 2026. There's been a lot of noise about it, but the headline is actually positive: we now have certainty on EV tax policy well into the 2030s.

Here's how it breaks down.
➡️ Until 31 March 2027 — full FBT exemption continues as is
➡️ 1 April 2027 to 1 April 2029 — full exemption for EVs under $75,000; 25% FBT discount for EVs between $75k and the luxury car tax threshold
➡️ After 1 April 2029 — all EVs under the luxury car tax threshold receive a 25% FBT discount

The $75,000 cap sounds more restrictive than it is. There are strong models available under that price point right now, and a good novated consultant should have access to fleet discounts that bring more vehicles below it than you'd expect.

One thing to be across: settlement must occur before each cut-off date. Not ordered — settled. Get the timing wrong and you risk missing the exemption you planned for.

Get it right, and a 30-month novated lease now followed by a 60-month term puts you in an FBT-exempt EV until 2034.
