A fantastic article every learner driver should read. The "mastery" of a skill -- be it comedy, tennis or ... driving -- entails repeated practice until it becomes instinctive. Novice drivers are often overwhelmed by how much focus and multi-tasking is involved, but within a few lessons such habits as braking for speed humps, braking for corners and checking mirrors when braking become ingrained. That allows drivers to then pay more attention to all the activity around them.

The only thing worth having is a skill to master.

Interesting statistic from VicRoads: The total pass rate for driving tests across Victoria for the past 12 months is 71%. The pass rate with instructors is 72.5%; the pass rate for drivers doing solo tests (ie in their own car) is 65%. Proper preparation with a good instructor will always improve your chances of passing a driving test.
