Moving forward
So Jim’s Driving school will be getting a name change shortly. Joining Jim’s was a great opportunity for me to have a change in careers. I have decided to move forward and I will be continuing to be a Driving instructor but under the NEW name Shortie’s Driving School

We may think that we have a clear vision. But checking your Blind Spot is so important. Did you see that motorcycle? Did you see that car come out of the side street and is now sitting just out of your mirror view?
Over the shoulder blind spot check may prevent a collision.

Pick a marker, count to three before you reach it. Go 4+ seconds in rain or at night.

Let me help you.
Failing for observations at intersection is probably the biggest one.
A lot of learners slow down and think that’s enough, but the examiner is looking for proper decision making. Before moving out, make sure you actually stop if needed, look both ways clearly and don’t rush because another driver behind you seems impatient. One safe extra second is always better than one risky move.

Poor mirror checks catch so many people out because nerves make you focus only on what’s ahead. Every time you change speed or direction, get into the habit of checking mirrors first. Even a tiny lane adjustment or moving around a parked car should come with a quick mirror check so the examiner can see you’re aware of what’s around you.

Hesitation is another huge reason people lose marks. Learners often wait too long at roundabouts or intersections because they want a perfect gap that never comes. You don’t need a giant empty road. If it’s safe and reasonable, commit confidently and keep the traffic flowing naturally.

Control on roundabouts causes loads of serious faults too. People either approach too fast and panic, or go too slow and confuse everyone. Before you reach the roundabout, sort your speed and gear early so you can focus fully on observations and lane discipline instead of fighting the car at the last second.

Not knowing the local test routes properly makes the whole test feel more stressful. Practising the difficult intersections, awkward lane choices and hidden speed limit changes beforehand makes a massive difference because nothing catches you off guard.

Struggling to keep your car in the middle of the lane?

👉 Pick a spot on your bonnet (like the edge of the logo or a windscreen wiper) and line it up with the centre of your lane as you drive. It helps you stay straight and centred, especially on narrow roads or when you’re first starting out!

✅ Combine that with checking your side mirrors and lane lines, and you’ll be driving like a pro in no time.

🚘 Leave Space When You Stop 🚘

🚦 When you are stopping behind another car always leave enough space to see their rear tyres touching the road from your driver’s seat.

This simple tip gives you:
✅ Room to move around if needed
✅ Extra reaction time if the car in front rolls back or stops suddenly
✅ A safety buffer in case of a rear-end collision

It’s a small habit that makes a big difference in safety and it’s something driving assessors look for on test day too!
