Question: How does a dealership make money on a capped price service (now sometimes free) if the cost of the parts needed alone outweigh the capped price?

Answer: they don’t actually do what’s required.

Right after a service agreement is expired the smaller workshops look bad because we suddenly have a list of items that need attention.

The sad thing is new cars don’t show symptoms of bad servicing until years down the track - when the service agreement with the dealer is expired. Filters are easily swapped out whereas oil leaks and other major problems aren’t and can come at a high cost if not repaired under warranty.

Don’t be fooled by the dealers! Your new car warranty is protected under Australian Consumer Law, not by the dealers. ANY registered mechanic can service and maintain your car and you’ll still have your new car warranty- the only difference is that the smaller guys actually care.

It may melt the ice away quickly but it also puts your windshield under immense pressure from the rapid change in temperature which can cause it crack or shatter.

Years ago you could get another set of keys cut for your car and you’d be right to go. Nowadays cars have intricate immobiliser systems with transponders in the keys which have to be programmed to suit the car. If you’ve got a set of keys that needs programming give us a yell!

This Patrol had its first drive since lockdown was announced but it didn’t last long before it broke down.

Long story short, the fuel gauge gave a false reading, leading to completely emptying the fuel tank and sucking air into the system. Gave it some fuel, bled the air out and it was good to go.

This may be a sign of things to come when more cars venture back on the roads after lockdown.

The performance of your brakes is greatly compromised by heat. Excessive heat from braking can cause brake pedal fade, disc warping (shuddering), squealing, heat cracks and so on.

An aggressive driving style (late and heavy braking) is one of the biggest causes for overheating your brakes but equally the quality of the discs, brake pads brake fluid, master cylinder etc have to be considered.

Any dash cam is better than none, but even more important than that is defensive driving especially in wet weather.

I noticed the other driver approaching the stop sign too quickly. I slowed down and sounded my horn before he reached the stop sign. Their brakes locked up from the sudden brake pressure, ABS did its magic. If I wasn’t anticipating an accident we would’ve collided.

In this clip I’m testing a cheap dash cam which I get asked a lot about. It showed the event clearly however it does not present number plates as clear but that’s besides the point of this video. Stay safe out there guys!
