Always good to see customers backing up what we talk about.
This 200 series came through after the owner called us about heat soak issues with the factory top mount. When it comes to fixing it properly the PDI front mount is the only solution.
Fast forward to now and he’s rolled in to show us the finished install.
Clean fitment and a setup that’s built to keep temps down and performance consistent.

300 Series V6 F33 Turbo Diesel in a 105 ***UPDATE***

Built to prove the concept of a 300 series (F33) engine installed in another model, our goal was to find out if a current generation engine could get equivalent power to a modified 1HD-FTE but be more efficient under all conditions and give a modern feel.

We have altered the intake and exhaust manifolds, moved and installed a bigger GTurbo, redesigned the engine mounts, updated the radiator shroud and built new intercooler plumbing. ***We are now making 380hp and 880nm at the wheels***

There are even more things that need to be done before finalizing any plans to release a kit - including travelling 10,000-20,000km for on-road and off-road testing.

Paired with the Ford 6R80 6-speed automatic transmission (in standard form) this setup is smooth and fast when required. PDI have also developed auto swaps (using the F150 6R80) for the 1FZ-FE and 1HDFTE (in 100 and 105 Landcruiser and therefore the 80 series) plus into the (normally manual 5 speed) VDJ79.

We are at the Perth 4WD Show. Had a good chat with a customer who had a PDI front mount fitted to his VDJ79. Compared to his previous build which had a top mount and made 800Nm the new build makes 900Nm. He stated that his couldn’t believe how much difference there is between 800 and 900Nm. I was able to explain that with our front mount you will get cold air all the time and maintain the 900Nm under real driving conditions, but when you have a top mount the Dyno tuner has to artificially cool down the core to do your last power run and when you hit the beach or go up a long hill the top mount can’t dissipate the heat so the ECU pulls fuel out and he is probably only getting less than 600Nm when he wants it the most. Both vehicles on display are fitted with PDI 6 speed auto kits and the 105 has the 300 series V6 and a locking TORSEN L*D in the rear.

A 300 series turbo diesel V6 with Ford 6 speed 6R80 automatic transmission in a 105 Landcruiser. After 12 months of it sitting into the carpark waiting for Boostec to make a pump driver for the ECU we are ready to put it back together again and see if it works and can be tuned. Once done we will be doing 10,000km and verifying the updated parts we have been working on. If its all good we will have a range of parts for conversions.

Reflecting on our trip through our drive through Uganda, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia and across South Africa last night (as flying home today).

It was surprising to realise that during the trip we paid no bribes and didn’t get pulled up for any suspicious reasons over the duration. This was due to some luck but mainly through planning and incredible knowledge of my friend that lead us. Everything went really smoothly, with the exception of the cold weather that altered a few plans and below -20degC temps meant we didn’t drive through the Sani Pass. I’m sure we were camping in sub zero (on the salt pans) with very light weight bedding. A bunch of people only got a few hours and then spent the night around the fire.

A totally worthwhile trip overall and has given me a much better opinion of parts of Southern Africa rather than just passing through it. I’m keen to spend some more time in Namibia again one day, but prob not before my trusty 105 makes its way to South America early next year for more spectacular scenery.

The 105 has been great to drive and the mild power upgrades and other mods have made it an all round great vehicle. When you realise how limited the availability of spares or expertise it’s important to have a simple setup that shares parts with other models. Lots of highway (and many many potholes) but plenty dirt tracks on poorly maintained areas. Then backroads and beating out way through roads that have been unused for years in the back of game parks and dragging up a stuck vehicle with all four tyres slipping and grabbing to haul it through. Then winching stuck vehicles out of bad washaways.
