Everyone who has ever spent time there will know that Tasmania is the undisputed best place in Australia for free and low cost / donation camping. What I was not aware of until recently is that South Australia is the best place for station stays.
The most amazing experiences in the most wonderful places. I know that WA, NT and QLD are all getting their act together in this regard, however they have lots of catching up to do.
We discovered the gem that is "Heggies Hill Bush Camp" while enjoying on of our other pursuits “Country Pub Camping” at the newly renovated Tarcowie Hotel.
On the wall of the main bar was a Newspaper article about a young couple that had left their jobs and lives in Adelaide to take on the family farm in difficult circumstances, and Alex and Maddie have done a brilliant job of opening up space on their property for campers. The views over the bottom end of the Northern Flinders from the camp spots is just breathtaking and when you add in that each site is secluded enough that you feel completely alone and that just behind you are plumbed in flushing toilets!
We thoroughly enjoyed our time here and will be back again when we are passing through the middle of South Australia.
