Today, our focus will be on the neck bearings of this old Hiab 175. We anticipated potential for substantial damage due to the significant movement. Upon removal of the column, we discovered that the bottom bearing race had completely disintegrated, despite being replaced approximately two years ago by an external service provider. The base is designed to be filled with gear oil to lubricate and minimize wear on the roller bearing; however, the bottom seal was not replaced due to the damage, and there was no oil present in the base. All components have been replaced, and our technician, Dean, has successfully repaired the damage to the column. Although the finish may not be comparable to that produced by a lathe, Dean has done an excellent job, meticulously welding and polishing the damaged areas, considering the time-sensitive nature of this repair. Hopefully, the Hiab will now retain the oil and continue to operate effectively for several more years.
