You will all remember this aluminium tank that i posted a few months ago, off a Suzuki RM370a, well here’s the finished article.
That horrible mess on the top of the tank where someone had tried to weld up the dents i cut that section out and made up a completely new piece which was beaten , shaped and formed to suit the tank which was fitted into place and completely butt welded as was a piece on the left hand side, these sections were dressed up and basically file finished but some small weld craters remained as i didn’t really want to chase those last few as these tanks are actually made from quite a thin material from factory so i left a few bits there.
The job was then prepared and epoxy primed and any marks that didn’t rub out had a little scrape of fine filler applied, then she was reprimed and ready for colour. After the colour was down the tank was rubbed to remove the shine and the decals applied, the bottom eas then masked up to prevent any overspray under there and a few nice coats if clear laid down to finish the lot off.
The customer has received some finished photos which don’t do the tank justice but he was over moon as he didn’t believe we could save his tank.

A couple of Bsa A10 Big Valve heads nearly finished for engine rebuilds in the shop, here we have 2 x 1549’s and a 1571, all have new guides, valves, seats cut and vacuum tested and installed heights and spring pressures checked, ready for a final wash up then assembly.

Heres a steel tank finished off just a few weeks ago from a Moto Guzzi Ambassador that actually held fuel until we stripped it and chemically cleaned it, and this is what we found which took both myself and the owner by surprise as like i said it held fuel.
This job turned into a massive reconstruction as both bottoms were absolutely hammered with rust holes and had been previously repaired by someone who added a ton of bronze which is a big no no as bronze multiplies the problem and causes cracks so both bottoms where cut out and new sections made and formed into shape which again was a massive job, the bottoms where then fitted and butt welded into place.
After they where done all the dents and damaged where beaten out and file finished before the tunnel section refitted and welded into place, it was then tested for leaks with 2 new fuel tap fittings machined up and welded into place.
The tank was then lightly blasted and epoxy primed, some filler had to be used as the parent material was quite thin and was needed to fill the external rust pitting.
After all that was done it was coloured & the black was wet rubbed and the shine removed so the white decals and pinstripes could be applied, which all this was done by hand with a brush, yes a brush then the whole lot was cleared over for the finish you see here.
Overall we where extremely happy with the outcome as at 1 stage it was a bit touch and go as to weather it could be saved or not, but anyway after a constant headache throughout the entire repair process we did save it but as you can see its all painted as it couldn’t be rechromed but i can honestly say this was 1 tank i was glad to see the end of.

Our customer has just received his 1941 Harley Knucklehead tanks and couldn’t believe they were the same parts as he’d given us to repair as several many others told him they were stuffed and couldn’t believe repaired so he had quite a few sleepless nights .
These tanks are extremely rare items and had to be saved but the absolute butchery from previous repairs was absolutely ridiculous ad Someone in the past had decided it would be a good idea to remove all the badge clips that were originally spot welded to both tanks with a hammer and chisel so in doing this they did complete their task but damaged the tanks that badly they had knocked a heap of holes in both of them while doing so, so again they thought it would be a good idea to try and fill the holes with bloody bronze and as I’ve mentioned many times prior bronze is 1 of the worst things you can use on a tank as it cracks the parent metal and keeps cracking so the repair gets bigger and bigger, so after removing the back sections and chemically stripping them all the bronze and the cracks were cut out and removed so new replacement pieces could be made, shaped and butt welded into place and all flame welded beaten and planished along the way so they could be file finished.
After our repair sections were completed the tanks were lightly blasted internally and the back sections replaced, they were then tested for leaks and the badge clips installed. The tanks were again lightly blasted, primed, dry rubbed and reprimed and were then ready for collection.
