Today is Josh’s turn.
His very tidy WH Stato went to the same shop. His story follows a similar theme.
Josh went there to get a Cam package. He wanted a VCM 710 cam with all of the supporting mods, and a Stally to suit. They told him they had a better Cam that “flowed more air”…. Would you believe it, they put in another 238/254 on 113 Cam…. A Cam that was way too big for Matt’s 6L, but absolutely ridiculous on a 5.7L. (I can only assume they bought a heap of these monster Cams, and now just throw them in everything)

Josh drove it around a bit but felt it was down on power. He took it back and was told it had “lost its tune, because it was reading from a wrong page”!!! WTF??? It’s not a fu***ng Librarian, and it can’t “lose its tune”.
Josh was charged $900 to put it back on the Dyno, for what I can only assume was to “find the correct page”!!!
Josh also had it back there a few times because it would not idle when the Air Con was on…. This was never rectified.

Josh dropped off the car to us with a FAST 92mm intake to fit and tune it with.
We did tell Josh that the Cam is too big, and would perform better with something actually suited to that engine, but he just wanted to get it going.
The car was just a stalling pig, and rubbish to drive, unless you were WOT everywhere….
I sorted the drivability and got it actually driving well.
Josh did send a message saying that it drives great and he can actually use the Air Con!!!

There are 3 cars that came from the same shop, that belong to this rather long story.

Today is Matt’s story. Matt contacted me a few weeks ago asking if we could change the Cam in his Manual VE 6L, then retune it.
Simple enough request, except that his Cam Package and tune was only recently completed by a “Performance Shop”…
Matt took it to this place to get a Cam that sounded tough, but was drivable. Matt stated that the thing was virtually undrivable. When he initially picked the car up, he said it had massive flat spots and crazy backfires whilst giving it moderate throttle. He had taken it back 3 times to get the guy to make it more drivable. (Each time he took it back, the guy charged him $1650 to “retune” it.)
I initially suggested that I try to sort the tune out and make it more drivable.
Matt decided he didn’t want to mess around, and just wanted a smaller Cam (suited to boost down the track) and a retune.
The Cam that was in it was 238/254 on 113.
When Matt turned up, he told us of the dramas he’d had:
1. Matt got a call saying that they were “having trouble getting the engine back in the car, and it would cost around $1000 extra”
2. He was told to bring the car back to re-torque the head bolts and have an oil change at a cost of $900, or else there would be no warranty
3. Matt had the car back there 3 times, at a cost of $1650 EACH TIME, to sort out the drivability issues
I was bloody furious!!! 🤬 This kind of s**t, gives the Performance industry a bad name!!! I urged Matt to seek assistance from Fair Trading, as I fully believe he has been completely ripped off!

Moving onto our part of the story.
The Dyno sheet that was in the car was done on a Mainline Hub Dyno, the same as mine, where it apparently made 471hp.
Straight onto my Dyno when it turned up, and it made 442hp. (Maybe my Dyno is a little tougher than his!)
Brad slipped in a much more sensible 226/236 on 116.5 Cam from Crow.
Then it was time for me to get to work. The tune in this thing was absolute fu***ng rubbish…. mind you, he had 4 goes at it, and charged over $5000 for that s**t. This kind of s**t REALLY pi**es me off, as you can probably tell….
Back onto the Dyno and as you can see, we lost 1 hp…. Yes, we lost a single hp, but check out the gains EVERYWHERE ELSE!!!
This thing picked up really good torque down low, as you can see, and is how Matt’s car should have been in the first place.
Matt messaged me when he got home and was super happy with the way it drives now.

Jake’s VE Ute was in for a Cam package after it came in with a very noisy lifter.
The Auto Ute got a small Crow Cam with all supporting mods to keep it going long term.
A nice result for a very basic setup.

Owen’s beautiful 1957 Chev Belair was in for a Tune.
Bought straight from the dealer by his Grandfather in 57, this one has remained in the family.
It now sports a crate LS3, backed by a 4L80e and 9 inch rear.
This beast is fully compliant and emissions legal….

Keiren’s Torana hit the hubs today to sort a few little issues.
I originally tuned this one about 5 years ago on the old Roller Dyno.
It’s a 403 cube LS, backed by a Glide and Salisbury.
After sorting an annoying misfire, she was back running strong again.

Tyler’s VY hit the hubs again after fixing a few fuel system issues.
In keeping with his budget build, Tyler made the turbo kit himself, using a Pulsar G42 1200.
The LS1 Manual runs on E85.
On 6 - 7 psi it makes 585hp, with high boost making 12.5 psi.
Should be fun on the back roads!!!!

Adam’s Berlina hit the Dyno after our Summernats break.
A baby Procharger provides boost to the Cammed 98 pump gas LS1. A beefy TH400 sends power to the stock rear.
A bit of belt slip sees boost drop away early, but still a solid effort from the little 5.7 litre!!!

Matt’s VF Ute was in for a blower kit.
The Auto machine already had a baby Cam and basic exhaust system.
Matt opted for a Harrop 2650 to boost up his L77, running on pump 98 fuel.
As with most upgrades, I enlisted Willsy’s Performance to fit the kit, and then onto the Dyno this morning.
A nice streetable combo with plenty of power for fun!!!!

Vicki the VY was back on the Dyno after a few mods/upgrades.
The TH400 was swapped out for a 4L80, with reverse pattern, full manual valve body and trans brake.
Up front, Martin is still running the same Dart 427, Higgins LS7 headed mill.
The new Harrop 2650 MK2 CNC blower replaces the standard model TVS 2650.

The extra boost and Airflow from the upgraded blower certainly does the job!!!!
