Rob specialises in making the challenges of risk and safety more understandable in the workplace. He uses his substantial skills and formal training in leadership, social psychology of risk and coaching to help organisations understand how to better manage people, risk and performance. Rob has more than 18 years experience in working with organisations in risk, safety and organisational culture. He has worked with large International organisations and small family businesses, bringing a diversity of knowledge and experience to clients. Rob builds relationships and ‘scaffolds’ people development and change so that organisations can achieve the meaningful goals they set for themselves. Rob has conducted safety audits, culture change programs, systems development projects, communication and leadership maturity consultancies for: Ambulance Service NSW, Sara Lee International, NRMA Group and Harris Farm Markets. He also has provided advisory, training and consultancy services to manufacturing, building and facilities, health, transport, automotive and sales/marketing businesses. Our judgements are never entirely detached from who we are, what we have experienced, the groups to which we belong, the stories circulating around us and the emotions those stories evoke. What one person experiences as threatening, another may barely notice. What appears unacceptable to one community may feel ordinary to another. Risk therefore has objective dimensions, but the human experience of it is deeply subjective, relational and social.

When I first wrote Please Don’t Try to Fix Me. I’m Not a Machine more than a decade ago, the idea was simple: machines can be repaired, adjusted and optimised, but human beings are far more nuanced and multifarious. When we experience anxiety, grief, loneliness, depression or any form of emotional distress, our instinct as individuals and as a society is often to search for the quickest solution available, because pain makes us uncomfortable and uncertainty can be difficult to tolerate.

This Mental Health Month, I wonder whether one of the challenges we face is that we have become increasingly seduced by the idea that every form of distress must have a quick fix.

Social psychologists have a name for this phenomenon. Henri Tajfel's Social Identity Theory suggests that people derive part of their identity from the groups they belong to. When we identify with a group, we begin to think less in terms of "I" and more in terms of "we". Even seemingly simple group memberships can create powerful feelings of connection, solidarity and shared purpose.

If you live in Newcastle right now, you'll feel it. It's in the conversations at the local café.

People do not make decisions outside their social world. Judgement is shaped by relationships, identity, memory, culture, expectations, experience and many influences that remain beyond conscious awareness.

Just get to the bottom of it.... 👇

I've been enjoying Johann Hari's book Stolen Focus recently, which prompted this blog post.

I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Every day, my phone offers to help me escape my phone. It allows me to silence notifications, set a time limit, enter focus mode or review a report describing how often I failed to resist it.

A reflective piece written after recently reading Johan Hari's Stolen Focus and re-reading Jacques Ellul's The Technological System.

It's a long one, but if you get to the end you may appreciate why.

"Here lies the paradox. We save time and discover that we have no time. We multiply connections and find ourselves lonely. We expand our choices and lose the capacity to choose what matters. We become productive in ways that leave us strangely unproductive in the things we claim to value. We get more done and, in the doing, miss what is happening.

Could our efficient lives be working exactly as designed, yet failing the human beings who live within them?"

While it is common to hear people suggest “I’m broken”, they don’t often ‘break’ in predictable ways, and they cannot simply be repaired with tools, checklists, or quick fixes. Yet the temptation to “fix” people is strong, especially when we care deeply and want to lessen pain, distress, or risk.

Anyone who has ever reached out in a moment of struggle knows this feeling. Asking for help can be an act of vulnerability; a step into a space where the other person’s response can either restore dignity or unintentionally diminish it.

In every community, there are people quietly navigating challenges with mental health, addiction, and the complex emotions that accompany them – shame, isolation, fear, and hope.

What often makes the difference is not a single intervention or program, but the presence of community: people coming together, listening, sharing stories, and reminding one another that recovery is not a solitary act.

In the community sector, we often talk about systems, governance, compliance and frameworks when it comes to tackling risk. These things matter. But beneath them sits something even more human: the way people make sense of risk together.
