Caravan Tip of the Day 🔧
Here's one that catches a lot of people. The tow ball weight listed on your caravan's compliance plate is measured when the van is empty — as in, nothing in it, exactly as it left the factory.
The moment you start loading up, that number changes. And it changes more than most people expect.
The rule is straightforward but easy to forget:
- More weight loaded in front of the caravan's axle increases tow ball weight.
- More weight loaded behind the axle decreases tow ball weight.
- Your tow vehicle has a maximum tow ball weight limit. Exceeding it puts extra load on the rear axle, reduces front-axle grip and affects steering — none of which you want on a long highway run.
- Don't forget: tow ball downforce weight counts toward your vehicle's Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) too. So it's eating into two limits at once.
Weight distribution isn't just a compliance thing. It genuinely changes how the van tows.

An educational weigh in Capel today for Jim's Mowing service. Two seperate car and trailers loaded with gardening implements. After their wiegh and some discussion about trailer loading a few changes made and they were off on their rounds for the day. A worthwhile experience for all.

Love or hate this guy but he absolutely nails it here. This is a true story folks. There is no room for a 'she'll be right' attitude when it comes to overweight rigs. Don't be that person.
