Bit more investigation of the old Bedford truck engine.

Looks like the #6 piston was the culprit. Rusted into the bore, it stopped anyone from being able to turn the engine over by hand for the last several decades.

This is the crank bearing shell from the main, between #3 & #2 pistons. After talking to a few folks who work on older, often stationary engines, we have concluded the that the Babbit lining has been eaten away by acid in the oil.

That acid, mixed with the minerals in the old school oil and the metals in the bearing. This started an electrolysis cycle that slowly pulled all of the ferric metal out of the Babbit lining, and into the oil. Leaving behind this weird, irregular cavitation pattern on both of the bottom main crank shells.

Probably a good thing it never got started up and driven round. These definitely would not have lasted very long.

It's a shame we have to pull it apart. I don't think I have ever seen a Subaru engine with hardly any servicing, and over 200,000ks, that looks this dry and leak-free.

So the plan is to pull of the heads and try to find this internal exhaust leak that's making its way into the water jacket and over pressurising the cooling system.
Best guess is it is a failed head gasket. Worst case is a crack in the head or block.

The old Subaru is up, running and ready to go!

A lot of little gremlins that had accumulated over it's 300,000ks have been sorted out.
New radiator and hoses, CVs, door cards and seatbelts to name a few. But now it's tuned in and running well, it drives great.

Slow, but great!
