We have wonderfull people choose the road less travelled & come to stay at Mt Ive! Thank you for coming & especially for sharing your beautiful snapshots of our backyard in the Gawler Ranges.
The last fire always feels different.
Four days ago we arrived at Mt Ive Station, Gawler Ranges S.A. not really knowing what these few days would become.
Tonight, we’re sitting beside our last fire and somewhere between those two moments, this place got under my skin.
Could be it was seeing country I thought I knew transformed by rain. Red earth covered in green, water where water rarely stays, Lake Gairdner holding water when I’ve only ever known it as that vast white emptiness.
Maybe it was discovering some of the history here or it might have been it was simply having nowhere else we needed to be.
You wake up out here and somehow feel lighter. Whatever load you’ve been carrying hasn’t disappeared but for a while it feels a very long way away.
Days become wonderfully uncomplicated, drive a track, stop because something catches your eye, or talk to someone you’ve never met or watch the light change. Then you come back and light a fire again.
Tonight though, the fire feels different because tomorrow we leave, perhaps that’s how you know a place has given you something.
You leave with the same vehicle, the same gear and the same road home but somehow, not quite the same person who drove in four days ago.
Thanks Mount Ive, you’ve been bloody good to us.
