How I do it!

Where possible I try to make my parts work with the factory mounting points. That way you can always return it to stock if you need.

There’s nothing worse than screw holes in your dash from some dodgy old accessory you no longer have!

Don’t overthink your projects!

I’m the worst at this. This is how my brain works:

I need new tyres. But I don’t want to put new tyres on these old rims. So I should get new wheels. But if I get new wheels then I should upgrade my brakes at the same time because that will change my offset. To do the brake upgrade I need to change the axels. So while the diff is out then I should put in an L*D.

Before I know it, I’ve gone from new tyres to a full rear end rebuild and upgrade.

This is the enemy of progress! So take my advice and take on smaller projects. Your car will stay on the road for longer and you’ll actually get to enjoy it more.

Reverse engineering and prototyping this part took me back to why I got into this hobby to begin with. Tinkering, trying things out, and just seeing what would happen. I’m very happy with the end result and hopefully they can breathe some new life into some old cars.

I saw this material on a YouTube video and thought I’ve got to try that.

TPU usually is tricky to print with and requires special setups. But this Siraya Tech TPU-GF is AMS compatible.

I did have to dry it thoroughly to get the best print possible print quality but that is typical of TPU.

Printer: Bambu Lab X2D (0.4mm nozzle)
Filament: Siraya Tech TPU-GF (black)

Layer height: 0.20mm
Walls: 4
Top/bottom layers: 5 / 3
Infill: 25% grid

Nozzle: 260°C
Bed: 35°C (textured plate)
Flow ratio: 0.96
Max volumetric speed: 12 mm³/s

Outer wall: 120 mm/s
Inner wall: 150 mm/s
Infill: 150 mm/s
First layer: 50 mm/s

Cooling: 30–75% (100% overhangs)
Brim: auto, 5mm

Extract entities is one of those essential tools in that I couldn’t do without. This is a simple use case which shows just how quick it can make reverse engineering in SolidWorks.

Hands down the most useful tool in for me is the cross section tool. Especially since SolidWorks on its own does such a bad job of this.

If you are working with a high density 3D mesh, the built in SolidWorks cross section tool will make a line for every intersecting mesh triangle. This will explode your computer immediately and send your graphics card into the stratosphere.

QuickSurface however makes a light weight reference sketch you can extract shapes from and sketch over the top of. I never want to go back to the old way of doing it!

SolidWorks reverse engineering tips - 001

Sketch pattern is very powerful when you need to pattern a body or a feature across a complex path. Place a point everywhere you want to pattern to and the job is done!

Gotta go fast 💨

Aligning 3D scans with in SolidWorks is as easy as 1-2-3.

1. Plane
2. Axis
3. Point

It can be difficult sometimes to think of what geometry you’re going to use to align your 3D scan to the global coordinates. I always try to think about how I’m going to model it first, and that will normally tell me.

Part 3 of 3 - Holden Gemini air vent

3D scanning and reverse engineering parts is starting to become second nature for me now. This project came out awesome!

I 3D scanned the original part using my Rockit then reverse engineered it in SolidWorks using . It took some trial and error to get the fit and feel how I wanted it but it was all worth it.

For all you Gemini guys and gals out there, these vents will be up on the website as soon as I have time to do the product photos.
