It might not look like much, but your wheel bearing has a pretty important job
A wheel bearing sits inside the wheel hub and helps your wheel rotate smoothly with as little friction as possible, while also supporting the weight and forces placed on the wheel while you’re driving
And yes… eventually, they can wear out 😐
💡 What causes a wheel bearing to fail?
Normal wear and kilometres are part of it, but potholes, rough roads, impacts, water or contamination can also contribute to premature wear
👂🏻 How do you know something might be wrong?
One of the most common signs is a humming, rumbling or grinding noise coming from around the wheel. The sound can become louder as your speed increases or change when you turn
Depending on how worn the bearing is, you may also notice vibration, looseness or changes in the way the car feels to drive
⚠️ Can you keep driving with a worn wheel bearing?
This is where we don’t recommend guessing. A worn bearing can get progressively worse and, because it’s connected to how your wheel rotates and is supported, it can become a safety issue if left unattended
That’s why checking for excessive movement, noise and wear around the wheels is part of the inspection process when your car comes into Fab Auto for a service 🛠️
If we find something that needs attention, we’ll give you a call, explain what we’ve found, how urgent it is and provide a quote before any additional work is carried out
Hearing something that doesn’t sound quite right? Your car might be trying to tell you something
