The Dodge Viper’s story begins in the late 1980s, inspired by the 1962 Shelby Cobra—a raw, powerful car created by Carroll Shelby with backing from Lee Iacocca. Iacocca, later heading Chrysler, sought to revive the company’s performance legacy, which had waned after the oil crisis and anti-pollution norms of the 1970s.
