⚠ WE ARE HIRING ! Why join the Ride Smart team?

Ride Smart Motorcycle Training is a locally owned family business established in 2002. From humble beginnings, we’ve grown to become the largest Q-Ride provider in South East Queensland, operating seven days a week across multiple Brisbane locations.

There’s nothing more rewarding than helping someone go from never touching a motorcycle to riding confidently and safely.

Years ago, Mick Doohan said:

“If I faced the same obstacles on the racetrack that you face on the road, I’d probably be dead.”

That statement is just as true today.

On a racetrack, every corner is known, the surface is predictable, there’s no oncoming traffic, and everyone is travelling in the same direction with the same goal.

The road is the complete opposite.
It’s about reading the environment, managing risk, staying visible, creating space, and always expecting the unexpected while still having fun through the twisties.

Ride like you’re invisible.
Think ahead.
Give yourself options.

This is an oldie… but it’s still a goodie 🏍️

Yes, it’s made in the UK, not Australia. And yes, some of the road rules and road markings are different.

But don’t get caught up in that.

The message is universal.

Good riders don’t just react to what’s happening directly in front of them—they constantly scan ahead, read the road, anticipate hazards and always have a Plan B.

At Ride Smart, we often talk about creating time and space. The more information you gather early, the more time you have to make good decisions and the more space you can create between yourself and potential hazards.

Whether you’ve been riding for 6 months or 30 years, there’s something in this video that will make you stop and think.

Have a watch and let us know in the comments what stood out to you the most. 🏍️👇

🏍️ Edge Filtering in Queensland – Know the Rules 🚦

Edge filtering is often confused with lane filtering, but they’re not the same thing.

Edge filtering is when a motorcycle travels at low speed on the road shoulder or in an emergency lane on major roads to pass stationary or slow-moving traffic.

✅ Edge filtering is only legal if:
• You hold an open motorcycle licence.
• You’re travelling at 30 km/h or less.
• The traffic you’re passing is stationary or moving slowly.
• You’re using a sealed road shoulder or emergency lane on a road with a speed limit of 90 km/h or higher.

❌ Edge filtering is NOT allowed:
• At speeds over 30 km/h.
• On roads with a speed limit below 90 km/h.
• On an unsealed shoulder.
• If you hold a learner or provisional motorcycle licence.

💡 Remember: Even when edge filtering is legal, it isn’t always the safest option. Watch for debris, stopped vehicles, emergency services, drivers changing lanes unexpectedly, and vehicles entering or leaving the shoulder.

The rules above are based on the current Queensland motorcycle road rules published by the Queensland Government.

🚦 Lane Filtering in Queensland – Know the Rules 🏍️

If you’re just starting your riding journey, lane filtering can be a bit confusing at first, so here’s a quick refresher.

✅ Lane filtering is legal in Queensland if:
• You hold an open motorcycle licence.
• You’re travelling at 30 km/h or less.
• The traffic you’re filtering between is stationary or slow moving.
• The vehicles are travelling in the same direction.
• It’s safe to do so.

❌ Lane filtering is NOT legal:
• Above 30 km/h.
• For learner or provisional motorcycle licence holders.
• In school zones during school zone hours.
• Between a vehicle and the kerb.
• Using a dedicated left or right turn lane to filter.
• In a bicycle lane.
• Anywhere it’s unsafe.

Remember, lane filtering is not the same as lane splitting. Riding between moving traffic at higher speeds (“lane splitting”) is illegal and significantly more dangerous.

And lane filtering is different from edge filtering, which we’ll cover in our next post.

Whether you’re on two wheels or four, a little awareness goes a long way. Riders—filter within the rules. Drivers—check your mirrors and blind spots before changing lanes. We all get home safer when we look out for each other. 👍🏍️🚗

The rules above are based on the current Queensland motorcycle road rules published by the Queensland Government.

That pedestrian came out from behind a parked car so suddenly, I’m pretty sure he spawned there 🤦🏻‍♂️🤣

Parked vehicles are one of the biggest reasons riders need to stay switched on in built-up areas.

You can’t always see who’s about to step out from in front or behind of a parked vehicle… and pedestrians often can’t see you either.

Kids chasing a ball.
Someone glued to their phone.
A delivery driver stepping onto the road to get back in their vehicle.
Etc.

That’s why smart riders don’t just ride to what they can see…
They ride to what could happen.

A small speed adjustment.
Setting the brakes.
A wider lane position.
Looking for movement under vehicles or gaps between parked cars.

These little decisions buy you time and space when someone suddenly appears where you least expect it.

Because once a pedestrian steps out from in front or behind of a parked vehicle, your reaction time becomes everything.

Parked cars.
Delivery drivers.
Uber pickups.
People “just stopping for a second.”

And one of the biggest dangers?
Cars pulling out from the hard shoulder with little or no warning.

Some drivers indicate early.
Some indicate halfway through the move.
Some don’t indicate at all.

That’s why riders can’t afford to just react to indicators.
We have to read behaviour.

A car sitting slightly angled out.
Brake lights turning off.
Front wheels start dry turning toward the road.
Body language inside the vehicle.
A driver looking over their shoulder.

By the time some drivers finally switch the indicator on, the car is already coming into your lane.

Good riders stay alert around parked vehicles because experience teaches you one thing very quickly:

If there’s space to pull out… eventually somebody will, sometimes without even looking.

What should this rider be doing differently? Share your knowledge to help our new learner riders in the comments.

Just remember… The faster you go through a corner, the more lean angle the bike needs to stay on line.

You’ll sometimes hear racers on the track say:

“Radius = km/h.”

What they mean is your speed should match the size and shape of the corner.

A big sweeping corner with a large radius can handle more speed with less lean angle.
A tight corner with a small radius requires more lean angle at the same speed.

That’s why two corners can feel completely different even if you’re travelling at the exact same speed.

But here’s where it gets interesting…

Not all motorcycles are built with the same ground clearance.
Cruisers, touring bikes, baggers and some lowered bikes can run out of lean angle WAY earlier than sports bikes.

At first it’s usually just a peg feeler touching down.
Or maybe the floorboards.
Then the exhaust, frame or hard panniers.

And once hard parts start scraping, things can go downhill fast.

As metal contacts the road it can:
• upset the balance of the bike
• reduce suspension movement
• momentarily unload part of the tyre
• reduce the effectiveness of the contact patch
• and reduce available grip and traction

Sometimes the hard part can even lever the bike slightly off the ground, which is why low bikes can lose traction suddenly once they exceed their available lean angle.

The scary part is most riders don’t realise how close they are to the limit until the bike starts touching down and by then there’s often very little room left for bumps, panic reactions or mid-corner corrections as the corner tightens up even more.

Good riders aren’t trying to spray the rider behind them with sparks even if it looks cool. 🤟🏻
They’re adjusting their speed and lean angle to match the corner they’re riding right now.

Experienced riders coming in for their license often say:

“But that’s not how I ride.”
“I’ve ridden this way for years without issues.”

And they’re not wrong.

Riders develop different habits and techniques over time. But during a Q-Ride assessment in QLD you’re judged against specific sequences, observations and behaviours required by Queensland Transport.

So even if you already know how to ride, the assessment is about meeting the Q-Ride competency standard, not your personal riding style.

That’s why charts like this matter.

Things like:
How you mount and dismount, move off and stop, set up and ride curves, and respond to hazards all need to be done the way the scheme requires.

A capable rider can still lose marks simply by missing a required observation or sequence.

The goal isn’t to change how you ride forever, it’s to understand what Queensland Transport expects during the assessment.

If you’d like help preparing for your RE (restricted) or R (unrestricted) licence assessment, we also offer both one-on-one coaching and group training sessions designed to help riders understand exactly what the Q-Ride system is looking for without any of the guesswork.
