NSW learner, P1 & P2 licence holders, take a read and make sure you are aware of your conditions regarding mobile phones. 🚘🅿️📵
Dad’s advice was free. Ignoring it? $423 plus 5 points!
Just before 8:30 am on Monday, 24 November 2025, officers attached to Leichhardt Highway Patrol stopped a 2013 white Hyundai on Canterbury Road, Canterbury, after observing a traffic offence.
When police noticed the learner plate, they also observed a mobile device fixed to the centre dash displaying the CarPlay feature on the screen. The driver asked police if she was stopped because the device was connected to her phone. Police confirmed this, and the driver stated that her dad had told her yesterday she wasn’t allowed to use it. She was also not displaying her green P plates.
The 20-year-old driver from Dulwich Hill was issued an infringement for “Learner or provisional P1 or P2 licence holder use mobile phone while driving”, which carries a $423 fine and 5 demerit points.
She was issued a caution for not displaying her P plate.
Here’s the clear message based on NSW law:
Learners and Provisional Drivers: No Phones, No Exceptions
If you hold a learner, P1 or P2 licence in NSW, you cannot use any function of a mobile phone while driving or riding—even if the vehicle is stationary in traffic or at lights. This includes:
CarPlay or Android Auto
Bluetooth hands-free calls
Music streaming
Maps and navigation apps
Texting, social media, or any other phone function
The only time you can use your phone is when your vehicle is parked out of the line of traffic (e.g., in a car park or driveway).
Breaking this rule can result in heavy fines and demerit points, and for learners or P-platers, it can mean losing your licence.
