This post here is all about Maintenance and the importance of it. H.M.R diesel and marine was recently tasked with a full cooling system strip, clean and reseal on a pair of Cummins QSB 5.9 engines. Notice the build up in the first picture of the heat exchanger calcium build up causing cooling and performance efficiency.
More alarming though in the other pictures is a leaking after cooler core caught just in time!
The aftercooler cools down boost air from the turbocharger before entering the engine’s intake. Had this cooler completely failed it would be a different story with sea water in the intake. Your marine engines cooling system should routinely be stripped, cleaned, inspected and resealed every 3 years.
