2009 Toyota Hilux – Clutch and Gearbox Repairs

A clutch kit alone wasn't going to fix this Hilux.

It came in for a complete clutch replacement. With the gearbox out, we found the clutch thrust-bearing shaft had broken away from the front bearing retainer, so a new thrust bearing would have had nothing to slide on.

We fitted a new front bearing retainer plate, clutch fork, slave cylinder and complete clutch kit. The flywheel was machined, the bellhousing cleaned and the gearbox oil replaced. Two seized exhaust bolts were repaired and a crossmember bolt replaced along the way.

The new thrust bearing now moves smoothly on its shaft, and the Hilux drove well on the road test.

2008 Toyota LandCruiser Prado – Drive Belt and Battery Repairs

One belt runs the alternator, the air con and more. When the tensioner starts to fail, everything on that belt is at risk.

This Prado came in with a problem around the alternator, belt tensioner and drive-belt pulleys. We removed the air-conditioning compressor and alternator for access, then replaced the complete drive-belt tensioner assembly and fitted the customer-supplied idler pulleys before the belt and everything else went back on.

The main battery had failed completely and wouldn't take a charge, so it was replaced. The alternator charge rate tested correctly.

With everything reassembled and checked, the Prado was road-tested and drove as it should.

2007 Ford Falcon – Second-Hand Engine Replacement

A second-hand engine rarely arrives ready to drop straight in.

This Falcon came in with an engine knock and needed a replacement engine. We removed the original and prepared the customer-supplied second-hand engine for installation. Its sump had already been off and several sump bolts were missing, so we used suitable bolts from the original engine.

The photos show the removal and the amount of checking and preparation that happens before a used engine goes in. Everything gets looked over along the way, because you only want to do this job once.

1993 Nissan 300ZX – Seat Belt and Engine Repairs

Not every repair on an older car is mechanical. Sometimes it's the seat belt.

This was the first part of a repair list for this 300ZX. Along with resealing the rocker covers and replacing several ageing engine hoses, we removed a seat belt and sent it away to be rewebbed, then refitted it once it came back.

On a car this age, small age-related jobs like this are worth doing alongside the mechanical work. It keeps the car safe, reliable and tidy without needing a separate visit.

2011 Jeep Patriot – This Shouldn't Be in the Cylinders

This was the next part of diagnosing the Patriot that came in running rough and hard to start.

We removed the spark plugs and carried out a compression test. The readings weren't the only thing that caught our attention — there was a large amount of water sitting in cylinders 2 and 3, which you can see being pushed straight out of the engine during testing.

Combined with the positive combustion gas test, this pointed to a blown head gasket.

2018 Nissan Navara – Seized Alternator Clutch Pulley

An alternator clutch pulley is meant to drive in one direction and freewheel in the other. This one was locked solid both ways.

The Navara was in for a timing chain replacement, and with the front of the engine apart we checked the alternator clutch pulley. The video shows it being tested during the job.

The timing chain kit and a new crankshaft pulley bolt were fitted and the vehicle road-tested. The seized pulley was an additional finding and we've recommended replacing it. A seized clutch pulley puts extra load on the drive belt and can cause belt noise and vibration.

2016 Hyundai Accent – Engine Light and Oxygen Sensor Faults

An engine light rarely means just one thing. This Accent had a list.

It came in with the light on and several other items to inspect. Both oxygen sensors were replaced. The rear sensor had seized in its thread, so the thread had to be repaired before the new sensor would go in. Both sensors were reading correctly on the road test.

The upper catalytic converter showed signs of having run very hot, with its internal material slightly deformed, so its performance needs to be watched. We also flushed the brake and clutch fluid.

The battery tested fine for now. Both front lower control-arm rear bushes are splitting and will need replacing, followed by a wheel alignment.

1993 Nissan 300ZX – Rocker Cover Oil Leaks

Fixing an oil leak on a 300ZX means taking half the top of the engine off to reach it.

This one came in for the first stage of a larger repair list, starting with oil leaks around the rocker covers. Access is tight, so we removed the intake manifold to reach the intake-side rocker cover gaskets, then removed the exhaust-side covers, cleaned away the old gasket and sealant then resealed everything properly.

While it was apart, we also replaced worn spark plugs and several ageing rubber breather and idle-air hoses. The photos show how much has to come off to do this job properly.

2011 Jeep Patriot – Testing for a Blown Head Gasket

This Patriot came in running rough and hard to start, so one of the tests we carried out was a combustion gas test on the cooling system.

The fluid changing colour gave us a positive result for combustion gases in the coolant. Combined with the other symptoms we found during testing, this pointed us towards a blown head gasket.

Further testing definitely gave us more to find…

2018 Nissan Navara – Timing Chain Replacement

There is no quick way to reach the timing chains on one of these. Most of the front of the engine has to come off first.

This Navara came in to have a customer-supplied timing chain kit fitted. We removed the covers and associated components, fitted the kit, then supplied and installed a new genuine Nissan crankshaft pulley bolt.

While the front of the engine was apart, we found the alternator clutch pulley had seized. That pulley still needs to be replaced. This was declined at time of the repair for scheduling later.

Once everything was back together, the Navara was road-tested and drove as it should.
