2011 Holden Caprice – Oil Leak

This Caprice came in with an engine oil leak and a request to check whether the rear ride height could be adjusted.

The underside of the engine and transmission was completely covered in oil, making it difficult to see where the leak was coming from. We found minor leaks from the rocker cover gaskets, but the sump gasket is suspected to be the main source. We degreased the engine and transmission and recommended bringing the vehicle back after another 100–200km so we can recheck it and confirm the exact source of the leak. 🔧

We also inspected the rear suspension for the requested ride height adjustment. The rear coilovers require specific coilover spanners to adjust them properly, so the vehicle will need to return with the correct tooling.

1996 Toyota Camry – Misfire When Hot

This Camry came in running rough and misfiring once the engine reached operating temperature.

The spark plugs were wet with fuel, after verifying satisfactory operation of all related fuel system sensors, we removed and tested all the fuel injectors, which were spraying correctly, we then refitted them with new seals. Compression testing showed the engine itself was healthy. The vehicle was still misfiring when hot, so we tested the injector signals while the fault was happening. We found the injector for cylinder 3 was being held on with constant power. 🔧

Once the vehicle cooled down, the injector signal returned to normal. This points to an internal ECU fault developing once the computer gets heat soaked. The ECU will likely need to be repaired.

2014 Mitsubishi Lancer – Gearbox Oil Leak

This Lancer came back in after a previous inspection to investigate an oil leak from the gearbox.

We found the gearbox was leaking oil from the top, where the two halves of the casing join. One of the bolts was broken, and one of the bolt mounting points had also cracked. It appeared the gearbox had been apart before and had been overtightened when it was reassembled.

The gearbox was beyond a straightforward seal repair, requiring a replacement case so we fitted a second-hand replacement gearbox and topped it up with fresh gear oil. After the repair, the vehicle was road tested and everything was working as it should. 🔧

Jeep Grand Cherokee – Post-Engine Install Check

This Grand Cherokee came in for a check over after an engine installation, including checking for leaks, missing or broken bolts, exhaust leaks and a hesitation under light throttle.

The road test was generally satisfactory, with only one small hesitation noticed under very light throttle. The live data from the engine sensors was reading correctly, so the hesitation may be related to the ECU still relearning its long-term values. We'd recommend bringing it back for another inspection if the hesitation becomes more noticeable. 🔧

We also found a few things that need attention, including an exhaust leak where the turbo joins the downpipe, unsecured wiring and transmission cooler lines, missing clips and seals, and incorrectly reading tyre pressure sensors.

2012 Mazda CX-5 – Overheating

This CX-5 came in overheating and losing coolant.

We pressure tested the cooling system but couldn't find any external leaks. After starting the vehicle, we noticed the system was building up unusual pressure. A chemical test then came back positive for combustion gases in the coolant, which points to an internal engine issue. 🔧

The cylinder head or head gasket is suspected to be damaged, and the vehicle will likely need either a reconditioned head and gasket kit or a replacement engine. The customer elected to not delve in deeper to this one currently, but we’re happy to help when they are.

2014 Ford Territory – Coolant Leak

This Territory was towed in after the owner found coolant sprayed through the engine bay.

We pressure tested the cooling system and quickly found a large split in the upper radiator hose. The replacement hose was a special order hose direct from Ford, after a fair wait, it arrived and we fitted it, bled the cooling system and pressure tested it again to make sure everything was sealed properly. We also replaced a blown brake light globe while the vehicle was here. 🔧

While inspecting the vehicle, we also found an engine oil leak coming from high up in the engine valley, with the oil filter housing the most likely source. We cleaned the engine and recommended bringing the vehicle back after 80–100km so we can confirm the exact leak location and provide an accurate repair quote.

2009 Holden Commodore – Oil Leak Found

A few months after the initial inspection, this Commodore came back with the oil leak still present.

This time we were able to trace the leak to the passenger's side of the engine, where it was coming from the oil filter housing. After removing the oil filter cap, we found the old O-ring had become hard and flattened from age, most likely because it hadn't been replaced for a long time. We fitted a new oil filter and O-ring, topped up the engine oil, then cleaned the area and checked everything again. No further leaks were found from the oil filter housing. 🔧

1983 Holden Commodore – Vibration Diagnosis

This classic Commodore came in with a vibration that the owner suspected might be coming from the tailshaft.

After a road test and inspection, we adjusted the seating of the front tailshaft universal joint, as the mounting points are showing some wear. We also found the engine had a noticeable vibration between 1,500 and 2,500 rpm, even while stationary in neutral. The engine mounts were old and the rubber had hardened over time, so we replaced them. The difference was noticeable, with the vibration greatly improved. 🔧

While it was here, we picked up a few other things worth keeping an eye on. The harmonic balancer is starting to show small cracks in the rubber and should be monitored at future services. The carburettor also looks like it's due for a rebuild, with fuel weeping from the gaskets and the engine not fuelling quite as it should. We also found signs of an old coolant leak around the thermostat housing, and the gearbox was noisy on the road test. We'll work through these items with the owner as needed.

2009 Holden Commodore – Oil Leak Investigation

This Commodore came in after the owner noticed oil leaking and pooling underneath the engine.

When we inspected it, the engine, subframe and surrounding components were covered in oil, making it impossible to pinpoint where the leak was coming from. We cleaned the engine thoroughly and let it run for an extended period before inspecting it again. Very curiously though, following our inspection there was no oil leak to be found. 🔧

The next step is to drive the vehicle as normal and bring it back for a complimentary inspection after about a week. If the leak is still present, it should be much easier to identify exactly where it's coming from.

2015 Holden Trax – Engine Oil Leaks

This Trax came to us for a severe engine oil leak.

The engine was covered in oil from top to bottom, we gave it a light clean first to track down where the leaks were coming from. We found the main leaks were from the rocker cover and the engine oil cooler, with the timing cover also starting to weep. The customer elected to have us replace just the engine oil cooler for now. We carried out the replacement then supplied fresh engine oil, a new oil filter and coolant. 🔧

The oil leaks have been reduced significantly, but the vehicle will continue to leak until the remaining repairs are carried out. The rocker cover should be replaced rather than just fitting a new gasket, as these are known to crack internally, and the timing cover leak will also need attention.
