Melbourne Suzuki

Melbourne Suzuki Suzuki Actor Training is a system of challenging physical exercises to develop the energy, focus and expression of the actor. The Training.

Melbourne Suzuki is a part of The Thursday Group - one of Melbourne's exciting theatre companies co-creating practice and performance development. We do Tuesday drop in classes in North Melbourne for performers who have done the Suzuki Method of Actor Training. If you have some experience with the training, drop by and train with us… we'd love to meet up! Suzuki training is psycho-physical method

of acting in which the experienced examine process or in-experienced performers develop skills in expression. Working with a vocabulary of formal exercises helps performers to self-evaluate and gauge variations of approach between members of the group. In the training, performers examine centre of gravity – develop a strong platform for speech and singing, self-critique habits and improve their general availability for working in all forms of performance. Ideas of animal energy, focus and maintaining concentration, breathing, stability, 'the grammar of the feet' and the 'mythic' in theatre are explored. Doing this vigorous training regularly is a good way to maintain skills and keep a constructive outlook for your path in theatre. Location
North Melbourne

That's a rap on Corporare—Evan Task in Outer Space. Thanks to everyone that assisted, that came or who sent the love. Such wonderful responses from attendees… not least the way the set installation was so functional… integral to the performance and, wioth the Trump/Musk axis forming before our eyes, how darkly prophetice the show has become. The more I continue in the articulation of Poor and Brechtian political theatre inflected with my investigation of Japanese contemporary theatre… of course with Suzuki training, but less well known in Australia, Kara Juro as interpreted by Kim Sujin's tent theatre, the more I am thrilled to have the opportunity to develop work within the fertile ground of The Thursday Group practice. To have a stable place of practice in North Melbourne to share with collaborators and the wider Melbourne theatre ecology is a treasure… ye gods please let that continue! Now for some R&R—meaning rest and reflection. I'd love to hear any of your reflections on Corporare as I intend for the show to tour.

Look out for Thursday Group's Monday Sessions development showing in late November: "Salmon", our annual psychophysical workshop in January 2025 and continued work on Falling Heads.

In last night's rehearsal I was struck by how rare it is to work ongoing, building practice and performance vocabulary in a theatre group with such committed artists as the members of The Thursday Group. We have been focusing on our co-devising processes—a combination of riffing on Akutakagawa Ryunosuke (Rashomon, The Story of a Head that Fell Off), research and finding ways to make performance from our slow-burn laboratory experiments. Tonight we do the first of two entry-by-donation open rehearsals… which are sold out. If you'd like to come tonight or next Monday, email me - there may be a cushion.

Falling Heads is Thursday Group’s response to Akutagawa Ryunosuke's lyrical anti-war short story, The Story of a Head that Fell Off (1917). Throughout 2023, we have developed practice from image, intonation and touch improvisations; this open rehearsal is a window on explorations of the notion...
