Today, on International Women's Day, VACC proudly recognise and celebrates the women who power every facet of our industry.

From technicians and apprentices on the workshop floor, to service advisors, parts specialists, trainers, executives and business owners, women play an essential role in keeping our industry strong.

Automotive is evolving rapidly. New technologies, new skills and new opportunities are reshaping the sector, and women are contributing at every level. Their leadership and resilience are helping to build a more diverse and vibrant industry for the next generation.

At VACC, we remain committed to supporting pathways and initiatives that encourage more women to enter, stay and thrive in automotive careers.

Today, we thank and salute the women across Victoria and Tasmania whose dedication and professionalism continue to drive our industry forward.

From first swing of a spanner to Apprentice of the Year 🔧🏆

This National Apprenticeship Week, we're celebrating the people shaping the future of our industry — and Sean Perry's story is the perfect example of why.

Sean never imagined that helping mates tinker with their cars would lead to being named VACC Apprentice of the Year, but that's exactly what happened.

"I fell in love after the first swing of a spanner. That moment made it pretty clear this was what I wanted to do."

Sean's journey is proof that an apprenticeship is more than just learning a trade. It's building lifelong skills, friendships, and a career in an industry that never stands still.

From building his first engine to working with the Penrite team at Sandown, Sean's story shows what's possible when young talent meets the right opportunity and support.

His advice? "If you're on the fence, remember it's a forever-changing industry with so many opportunities."

This National Apprenticeship Week, there's never been a better time to consider a career in automotive, or to invest in the next generation of technicians.

A chance conversation during a car service changed everything for VACC Apprenticeship Field Manager Anna Palermo.

That moment sparked a remarkable journey through dealership management, earning her national recognition as a service advisor and shaping hundreds of customer experiences along the way.

But after three decades in the industry, Anna wanted to give back. In 2022, she joined VACC's Automotive Apprenticeships team, bringing her wealth of industry knowledge to the people who need it most, the next generation of automotive professionals.

"It's about teaching employable skills and life skills," she explains. "Sometimes they just need someone to listen, to guide them, and to remind them that every challenge is part of their growth."

From V8 Supercars enthusiast to Field Manager, Anna's story is one of genuine passion for the industry and the people in it.

15/09/2025

While AI is starting to replace receptionists, administrators, and even research assistants, automotive technicians remain irreplaceable. Here's why:

AI can't get under a bonnet. It can't remove a seized bolt or test drive a vehicle. It definitely can't diagnose that mysterious rattling sound using real-world intuition or explain a complex repair to a worried customer.

Modern cars are sophisticated machines blending mechanical systems with smart sensors and electric drivetrains. But they still need human hands, human problem-solving, and human expertise to keep them running.

As one Melbourne workshop owner put it: "You can't ask a chatbot to replace brake pads or diagnose a driveline vibration. "

While 37% of employers prefer AI over new graduates for entry-level roles, automotive technicians are more in demand than ever. That's job security you can count on.
