2003 Evolution 8MR Intense 5353RS Mafless Flexfuel Stock ECU

Dino has owned this Evo 8 MR since it was completely stock and, rather than doing everything at once he has built the car up in stages over the years enjoying each setup before moving on to the next.

From the first bolt on modifications running 98 through to E85, and now onto the next stage of the build. It was finally time to step things up again with a new turbo, camshafts, valvetrain upgrade, Mafless conversion and Flex Fuel setup controlled through the factory ECU.

Dyno results:
98 - 243kw / 370nm @ 24psi peak

Going Mafless / Speed Density
By removing the factory MAF sensor from the equation, we now utilise MAP and IAT sensors to calculate engine load and airflow.

This gives us much more flexibility with the setup, allowing for larger intake systems, bigger turbo combinations and a vent-to-atmosphere BOV without having to work around the limitations of the factory airflow meter.

It also helps eliminate the common stalling and over-fuelling issues that can occur when metered air is vented to atmosphere on a traditional MAF-based setup.

The Flex Fuel setup gives the freedom to run 98, E85 or anything in between. The ECU reads the ethanol content and adjusts the calibration accordingly, so there’s no need to drain the tank or manually switch between separate fuel tunes.

Perfect for street, long drives, spirited runs and track duties.

Not every modification needs to make more power

One of the most overlooked upgrades on a performance car is something that doesn’t add a single kilowatt

Your engine relies on a constant supply of oil being available at the oil pump pickup.

Under hard acceleration, braking and cornering, oil can move rapidly around inside the sump. If enough oil moves away from the pickup, the pump can momentarily draw air instead of oil.

That means a sudden drop in oil pressure. At high RPM and high engine load, even a brief loss of oil pressure can cause serious engine damage

So what does a baffled sump do?

A baffled sump uses internal plates, gates and/or trap doors to control oil movement and help keep oil around the pickup during high-G acceleration, braking and cornering

But baffling is only part of the equation

What about an extra-capacity sump?

A larger-capacity sump increases the total amount of oil available to the engine

Some of the benefits can include:
- Greater oil reserve
- Better temperature control
- More time for the oil to recover
- Better suited to sustained high-load use

The ideal setup combines good oil control with appropriate oil capacity

More power, more grip and higher RPM all place greater demands on an engine's oiling system

We spend a lot of time talking about turbos, fuel systems, tuning and horsepower but none of it matters if the engine can't maintain consistent oil pressure

Sometimes the most important performance modifications don't make the car any faster

They help make sure it keeps running

Mitsubishi Evo 8 Suspension Refresh & Maintenance

Not every job through the workshop is about making more power.

This Evo 8 came in for a much needed suspension refresh and maintenance work, with a number of ageing components replaced and the suspension setup upgraded.

Work carried out:

- Inner Steering Rack & Outer Tie Rod Ends
- Front Control Arm Bushes

DYNO POWER FIGURES vs FACTORY POWER FIGURES: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

We hear this one all the time

“My car comes with 300kW from the factory… why is it only making 250kW on the dyno?”

The answer is simple, you’re comparing two different measurements.

🔴 FACTORY / BROCHURE POWER 🔴

When a manufacturer advertises a car as making 300kW, that figure is generally quoted as engine power measured at the engine/crankshaft, before the power travels through the drivetrain.

This is generality done on an engine dyno.

⚙️ DYNO POWER

When we put your car on our chassis dyno, we’re measuring the power that it makes at the tyres

Between the engine and the tyres you have components such as:

Engine,Transmission,Driveshafts,Transfer Case, Differentials and Axles

All of these contribute. This is called drivetrain loss.

General rule of thumb:
- FWD loses about 10%
- RWD loses about 15%
- AWD loses about 25%

💡 THIS IS WHY THE BASELINE MATTERS

For us, one of the most important numbers isn't simply the final dyno figure.

It's the difference between BEFORE and AFTER.

If your car arrives making, 245kW ATW and leaves making 300kW ATW

That's a genuine 55kW increase at the wheels measured on the same dyno, under the same testing conditions.

That tells you far more than comparing a chassis-dyno result with a number printed in a manufacturer’s brochure.

2023 Volkswagen Tiguan R PPM Stage 2

This Tiguan R came in already fitted with all the right supporting hardware and ready for a PPM Stage 2 ECU tune.

CUSTOM DYNO TUNING vs OFF-THE-SHELF TUNES 📊

We get asked this a lot at Prestige Performance Motorsports

Why custom tune when you can simply buy an off-the-shelf tune?

The truth is, both have their place.

⚫️ OFF-THE-SHELF TUNES ⚫️

OTS tunes are pre-made calibrations designed to suit a range of cars with similar modifications.

The Good:
✅ Cheaper & convenient
✅ Great for relatively standard cars
✅ Easy way to get a little more performance

The Downside:
❌ Not tuned specifically for YOUR car
❌ Doesn't account for every combination of modifications
❌ Often developed overseas and not specifically for Australian fuels
❌ Your car isn't being tested or monitored on the dyno

🔴 CUSTOM DYNO TUNING AT PPM 🔴

When we custom tune your car, we're tuning your actual car, on our dyno, with your modifications and your fuel.

We monitor AFR, ignition timing, knock, boost, fuel pressure, temperatures and more throughout the tuning process.

2017 Audi S3 Stage 1 ECU + TCU - Tuning Breakdown

This Audi S3 came to us already fitted with a catback exhaust and ready for the next step in performance.

John had requested to do intake upgrade with all hardware to be Integrated Engineering. We supplied & fitted an IE intake, IE turbo inlet and the IE turbo muffler delete.

One thing we always like to do with every tune is establish a before and after result which is measured on the dyno.

Before making any calibration changes, we want to see exactly how the vehicle is performing in its current state. This gives us a baseline, allows us to assess how the car is running, and most importantly gives the customer a genuine comparison once the tuning is complete.

We simply don’t do flash and go tunes here. With every tune, we collect data, make the necessary adjustments, and ensure the calibration is consistent, reliable, and tailored to each individual vehicle.

With our custom ECU and TCU calibration, we were safely able to extract:

+56kw more power
+70nm more torque

The ECU tune allows us to optimise areas including boost control, ignition, fueling, throttle response and torque delivery, giving the vehicle a much stronger and more responsive power curve throughout the rev range.

The TCU tune is equally important. By recalibrating the transmission we optimise torque limits, clutch pressure, shift points and transmission response under acceleration.

The result is a dsg gearbox that works with the extra power and torque rather than holding it back.

For the driver, that means sharper shifts, stronger acceleration through the gears and a much more responsive and connected driving experience.

Combined with the IE hardware, the S3 now breathes better, responds harder and delivers more performance while retaining the drivability expected from a daily driven S3.
