When Acre Lowered Its Banners

For two long years the ramparts sighed,
while armies gathered side by side,
The harbour darkened under sail,
the towers endured each stone and gale,
Then Acre heard the final call,
as hunger weakened gate and wall,
Richard arrived with lion’s name,
Philip brought France’s royal flame,
The garrison, exhausted, bowed,
beneath the watching, armed crowd,
The city passed through blood and fear,
yet peace itself remained nowhere near,
For triumph carried vengeance’s seed,
and captives paid for rulers’ greed,
Thus Acre’s fall still seems to say,
that victory may lose the moral way…

On 12 July 1191, the city of Acre surrendered to Crusader forces led principally by Richard I of England and Philip II of France during the Third Crusade. The surrender ended an exceptionally long siege but did not end the conflict over Jerusalem or prevent later violence against prisoners. (On This Day)

I still remember those winter days,
When sunlight danced in your restless ways;
A tiny storm on four soft feet,
Turning every moment into heartbeat.
That tongue out smile, that fearless cheer,
No shadow ever lingered near;
You carried joy in every stride,
Like the whole wide world lived in your eyes.
You grew, yet stayed that same wild spark,
Lighting my days, outshining dark;
No matter how long the roads I’d roam,
You were the definition of home.
And how you’d wait — oh, how you knew,
The sound of footsteps that belonged to you;
Before the door could even part,
You’d already run into my heart,
What strength you held in your silent fight,
Through unseen pain, through fading light;
Not once you broke, not once you cried,
Just looked at me… and quietly tried,
If love alone could rewrite fate,
You’d still be here, still at that gate;
Leaping again, that boundless flame,
Calling my soul without a name.
Now every room holds echoes of you,
In corners where sunlight gently grew;
In every silence, soft and deep,
You’re the memory I get to keep.
Bush, Run free now, where no pain can stay,
Where endless fields invite you to play;
Chase the winds, touch skies so wide,
With all the stars as your open guide,
And when my time on earth is through,
Don’t wait too long — I’ll come find you;
Same soul, same bond, no goodbyes then
We’ll run together… again… again...

Washington’s Farewell to Command

In Annapolis’ restrained embrace,
He stood with calm, unhurried grace;
A general crowned by triumph’s claim
Now bowed before the civic flame.
No laurel sought, no throne desired,
Though armies to his will aspired;
He placed his sword in Congress’ hand
And chose the path of private land.
The marble hush of history’s hall
Heard power yield, astounding all;
For victory’s glow could not entice
His conscience from republican price.
February’s twenty‑first declared
That liberty is best when shared;
Authority, though fiercely won,
Must end where people’s rights begin.

On 21 February 1784, George Washington formally resigned his commission as Commander‑in‑Chief to the Continental Congress in Annapolis, reinforcing civilian control over the military in the new United States

Purna Swaraj, Pledged in Winter

Not firework-bright—more coal-in-hand,
A vow passed mouth to mouth across the land;
“Complete independence,” spoken like a drum,
A future pulled toward them, hard-won, to come.
Flags rose in streets where fear had learned to live,
And ordinary people chose to give—
Their comfort, peace, their silence—priced too high,
For freedom isn’t begged; it’s built and tried.
The empire heard, but pretended not to hear;
Still, every whisper sharpened into spear.
Seventeen years later, dawn would finally stay—
Yet this was the seed: the vow, the day.

----------------------------
On 26 January 1930, the Indian National Congress urged Indians to observe the day as “Independence Day,” linked to the Purna Swaraj (complete independence) resolution that intensified the freedom struggle against British rule.

The Republic’s First Morning

At midnight’s edge, a million breaths aligned,
Ink became oath, and law became a mind;
A tricolour of hope, through hardship spun,
Declared: “We rise—yet rise as more than one.”
From court to classroom, from farm to crowded street,
A constitution taught the future how to meet;
Not perfect—no—yet daring in its scope,
A scaffold built from equality and hope.
The ballot’s hush replaced the whip’s command,
And dignity was written into land;
So every right, though wrestled day by day,
Still finds its root in that first vowed array.

On 26 January 1950, the Constitution of India came into force, making India a republic, and Rajendra Prasad was sworn in as the first President—now commemorated as Republic Day.

The Sea Gets Law

Waves agreed to human ink,
Limits drawn before the brink;
Trade flowed safer, nets held back,
Commons spared a total crack;
Oceans gained a guarded name,
Shared responsibility, shared claim.
