Get control

Imagine crashing because you weren’t using the correct vehicle mode to maximise traction. Likewise imagine damaging a vehicle because you were using the wrong mode on the wrong road surface.

Many Mitsubishi 4WD vehicles (Pajero, Pajero Sport and Triton) feature the Super Select II system. Lower spec base models have a simpler version.

2H mode sends the engine power to the rear wheels. This mode is used on high grip roads and improves fuel economy.

4H mode sends the engine power to all four wheels providing 4-wheel drive grip.

Importantly in this vehicle (because it has a centre differential) 4H can be engaged on high grip roads. This helps when the road is wet or when towing. Note in many open back utilities (Ranger, Hilux, BT50) 4H cannot be engaged on high grip surfaces, due to the vehicle not having a centre differential. Transmission windup would occur and expensive damage would result.

Note 4H in the Mitsubishi 4WD vehicles with Super Select II does provide engine power to all 4 wheels while the vehicle has traction. But if any one wheel slips and spins, all the power will escape through the spinning wheel. In theory the other 3 wheels will no longer drive the vehicle, although traction control and suspension articulation will help to prevent the one wheel spinning.

4HLc is the mode used on lower grip roads like gravel, sand and mud. The ‘Lc’ stands for lock centre differential. So now engine power is split 50/50 between the front and rear axles. To become stuck (bogged) the vehicle would need to spin both a front and rear wheel.

All of these modes (2H, 4H, 4HLc) can be switched between while driving. Provided the accelerator pedal is not being used. Note the driver needs to ensure the road surface suits the mode being engaged.

Stability control and traction control are available in these modes.

For tougher off-road conditions. The driver can stop, select Neutral and then engaged 4LLc which is four-wheel drive low range with the centre differential locked. Stability control might turn off at this time. Or if the vehicle has terrain select the driver can choose between, rock and sand/mud modes. This will change how sensitive the accelerator is and alter how intrusive the stability control is.

All of this and so much more is taught in our off-road course, featured in our Safe Driving in PNG book, and modules in our online 4WD course cover this is much greater detail with videos showing the viewer each scenario.

To all our new followers.

Thanks for your interest in our driver training courses or in Safe driving in general.

The new thing is the purpose built driver training centre at 9 Mile in Port Moresby. This is owned and managed by Corps Security.

Driver Training PNG is our new business name. We are owned by Safe Drive Training (Aust) Pty Ltd which is known as SDT.

SDT has been operating across PNG and the Pacific Islands since 2008.

Currently our courses are only available to group bookings. The company or government department pays a day rate for our training.

Soon we will have a low cost online course with video modules that have been filmed in PNG.

We also are about to launch a 124 page book on Safe Driving in PNG.

A first for the nation

Be proud PNG, you have a first class driver training centre. It was designed by me. I am a Civil Engineer and one of Asia-Pacifics leading driving instructors.

But the true thanks must go to Corps Security for investing in such a facility. It’s been a huge undertaking by them.

Now companies and government departments can send their drivers to Port Moresby for driver training in defensive driving, security and 4WD off-road skills.

Careful what you wish for

Many course participants who attend our training across PNG and the Pacific see some videos showing Australian roads and they lament the poor state of roads in their respective nations.

However to fund good roads isn’t just about money and resources, it also relies on revenue from registration and traffic fines. These fines also fund Police resources to generate more fines via cameras and monitoring devices.

The State of Queensland receives PGK$1.5 billion ($1500 million) each year from traffic fines.

The attached story shows a learner driver caught speeding by a Police speed camera. There was not an experienced driver with them (which is required by law) and the vehicle was defective. The traffic fine was a huge AUD$2223 which is almost PGK7,000.

So if you want better roads you are also asking for more enforcement and higher fines.

And be warned if you visit Australia. You can be fined in many ways, for many things and each will cost you huge amounts. The system needs to be funded and the road users are the source.

Another day, another group

We finished up today with another group of security drivers from ExxonMobil PNG.

Move and go

Here is a video of a better cross decking manoeuvre. The scenario is that the vehicle on the left has been disabled and when the rescue vehicle arrives the security officer climbs through the disabled vehicle and moves (but also holds securely) the Principal as they are moved into the rescue vehicle.

The rescue vehicle parks to provide cover (and concealment). If soft skinned, everyone is in danger so the rescue is done efficiently and the driver of the rescue vehicle should drop down behind the steering wheel and dashboard to conceal themselves and reduce the target.

A Y-turn is performed by the rescue vehicle as it leaves the scene.

This training is provided by us across Papua New Guinea. We have been training in PNG since 2008.
