A look inside HMF’s manufacturing facility in Højbjerg, where HMF loader cranes are built.

One of the keys to HMF’s impressive strength-to-weight ratio is the use of high-quality, high-tensile steel. Its greater strength allows less material to be used where possible, helping reduce overall crane tare weight without compromising structural strength.

BTS | Building a torque box subframe

Here is a behind-the-scenes look at our team manufacturing a torque box style subframe for an HMF crane installation.

Torque box subframes are commonly used for larger cranes, particularly rear-mounted installations. Their purpose is to add torsional stiffness to the truck chassis and limit twisting between the crane at the rear and the auxiliary stabiliser legs toward the front.

This creates a more rigid lifting platform and allows the weight at the front of the truck, including the cab and engine, to act more effectively as counterweight.

Chassis rigidity is especially important for larger HMF cranes using the EVS stability system. EVS continuously monitors the tilt of the crane base when calculating the available lifting capacity, so limiting chassis flex helps the system deliver stable and predictable crane performance.

A lot of engineering goes into an installation before the crane is ever mounted onto the truck to ensure our customers get the most out of their crane.

We’ve seen HMF cranes used for plenty of interesting jobs over the years… but working on an F-16 fighter jet is certainly up there.

What makes HMF’s EVS stability system unique?

EVS measures the angle of the crane base and dynamically adjusts the available lifting capacity according to the vehicle’s actual tilt.

Because it measures real-time stability, the system can also account for payload on the tray acting as a counterweight, as well as how far the stabiliser legs are extended.

Rather than relying on fixed lifting zones, EVS continuously adapts to the vehicle’s setup and conditions, giving the operator the maximum safe lifting capacity available in every direction.
