So I was bored this afternoon so I started having a play around with some springs, specifically "progressive" spring.

I tested 2 springs a 4.5kg/mm straight rate spring and a 4.5kg/mm - 5.4kg/mm progressive spring.

The 4.5kg/mm spring is for a recommend weight of 40-50kg

The 4.5kg/mm - 5.4kg/mm is recommended for a 35-40kg rider.

These are taken from the manufacturers recommendations.

Now the blue line is the 4.5kg/mm linear spring, you can see it's the same through the stroke up to 100mm.

The red like is the progressive spring, from 0-100mm it is progressive 12%, we usually aim for 10mm preload with the springs on these bikes, in that 100mm we go from about 4.5kg/mm to close to 4.9kg/mm/5.0kg/mm

The stroke of the shock this goes on is 87mm.

So we take up the 10mm preload and up until 65mm the spring is linear so at 63% of the stroke we are linear 4.5kg/mm, from 65mm to 87mm, 25% of the shock stroke the spring starts to rise in rate and for that last 25% we get a 6% increase in spring rate.

Barely progressive I'd say, and I think with a 30-40kg rider you're probably not running 10mm of preload so it's even less effective.

Anyway just thought it was interesting...
