Manager of the Month! BDS Mechanical is supported by a team of long-standing managers who have been with the company for many years, demonstrating consistent hard work, dedication to their roles, and a strong commitment to the organization. This month we are featuring Ricardo, our BDS Mackay Manager. In October 2025, Ricardo will be celebrating 5 years with BDS.
Ricardo started off with BDS in Moranbah on a 7/7 roster as a heavy diesel mechanic and auto electrician for just over 12 months. He then moved to Mackay to take over running the Mackay Workshop in July 2022 and has been doing that ever since.
One of Ricardo's biggest achievements while working with BDS is moving up from being on the floor to management, working hard the last couple of years to bring the Mackay branch to where it is today. As for challenges, every day brings a new one: working with new youth of today, keeping staff and clients happy, maintaining efficiency in a workshop with cost of everyday living increasing, and trust.
Advice from Ricardo for anyone wanting to take on the challenge of a 2IC or managerial position:
✅ Know your strengths, focus on building good relationships with your employees and clientele, build and develop leadership skills, work on communication skills and development
✅ Work on time efficiency to complete daily task and workloads
✅ Don’t micromanage
✅ Be fair and consistent
✅ Be authentic and true to yourself and your values as this builds trust and respect
Outside of work, a passion Ricardo has is playing and coaching rugby union. He still plays for the local club in Mackay, while also coaching the local junior club. He enjoys teaching and developing the younger generation coming through the age groups to reach their dreams. Most of his free time is spent on the weekends at the rugby league, union and netball fields watching his three kids play their sports. When he isn't at work or rugby, Ricardo spends his time with his family and friends or goes on the occasional fishing and camping trip when possible.
