This western star was on its second set of batteries in just a few months. I found the fault being a bad connection in the alternator sense wire, causing the alternator to increase it’s regulated output to try and maintain 14v at the sense terminal. See the contents for another video showing it a bit more clearly with the engine off

When all the usual tricks aren't working, some thinking outside the box and using the tools at hand in a different way can be all thats needed to get a result.

By putting a 100w load on the circuit i needed to trace, using my thermal camera i could see the wires under load as they run a couple of degrees warmer than ambient temp.

This lead to finding a rub through short between the left and right indicator circuit in the overhead console.

This month we have had the pleasure of having 2 young lads from Mackay Christian College Trade Training Centre come and do work experience. Both Derrick and Seb showed great initiative, interest in the Auto electrical field and a keen and positive attitude. They both were a great reflection on the trade training centre and themselves personally. Thanks 😊

Glad to help this customer quickly resolve the issue causing their digger to not start. The thermal imaging camera made short work of finding a diode that had internally shorted.

Today I finally got to put my new oscilloscope to use. Diagnosing an abnormal update rate fault code on a Cat machine, finding that the J1939 CAN wires were around the wrong way at one module. In the pics you can see the blue and yellow wave forms swapping polarity as some points. And the last image is a good wave form reference after the fault was repaired.

Graders have been keeping me busy so far this year! Thanks Matty for treating my trailer to tow behind something with a bit more torque 😉 today we diagnosed and repaired a shorted transmission solenoid that failed the driver circuit in the ECM. ECM failure is pretty rare so good to tick this one off and get it back to work in time for the customer. Matt Hills

A nice shiny upgrade for this Cat 16M grader. In order to achieve BMA compliance, the isolators needed to be upgraded from single pole to double pole. To achieve this and bring together both isolators, unisolated supply circuit breakers for the mine radio and the jump start receptacle in a clean weather proof solution, I designed, fabricated and installed this stainless steel enclosure. It’s great working with customers that have a similar attention to detail, they redesigned the service fittings to integrate perfectly with the isolation station.

A good tradesman never blames his tools... because he has the right tools for the job! Diagnosing and repairing a customers auxiliary battery system that was not working properly, I found the negative terminal broken off, easy fix. Then using my Bosch Australia thermal imaging camera I was able to easily see a bad connection at the positive terminal and repair that before it became a problem. The next step was using my Klein Tools clamp meter to check charge rate and each load. I found that the original install had 2x large flood lamps drawing 8a each. Far too much draw for the 100ah battery to last the night. With a bit of education to the customer and some low wattage lamps and a clean of the solar panels the system was all working as it should.

My old faithful multimeter of 12 years is finally up for replacement. A few to many hot suppers on the amp setting and it just isn’t as reliable as I need in a piece of diagnostic equipment. So I went to MM Electrical - Mackay to buy the same thing again, but ended up walking out with something different! Enter Klein Tools Australia MM700 and CL390 multi meter and clamp meter respectively. So far they look like a tough bit of kit but the real test will be how they survive out in the field. Keep you’re eye out for them in future posts here to see how they fare.

Tracing and finding an open circuit with a tone generator

With the right tools and knowledge, identifying and locating broken wiring is a quick and accurate process. This Toyota HJ75 wouldnt shut down Because there was no power to the EDIC motor relay. Once the broken wire was fixed, problem solved!
