GU Ute in for a re tune to reduce soot and get some fuel economy back. No wonder why it chewed a bit with AFRs not getting above 15:1 below 2000rpm. Nice and safe now with a little more over rev power. Also brought the boost down a bit to get it back below 30psi

That’s a wrap for the Don River Dash!

We set off in the race very strong for day 2 and managed to get into first outright before we got buzzed by the chopper and the first of the trophy trucks came past us on the return leg of the first lap. We felt a lot more comfortable than yesterday and were able to hold it flat for the majority of the course.

Second lap a few more of the big guys came past but after hitting the water section we developed a bit of a misfire that got progressively worse. We decided to pit and soaked all the electrics in contact cleaner before starting the third lap.

We took off strong but by the end of pit lane we were misfiring again. We pushed on for a bit more before the buggy went into limp mode. We stopped and found we had an o2 sensor fault code. We reset everything and the code cleared and the buggy ran better than ever so we hooked in to make up lost time. We decided to avoid water wherever possible. Our motto for the day was “trees will grow back but lost time won’t” so we pushed a track around the deep section. On the return leg our fault appeared again but we managed to quickly reset and keep going. We had to do that several more times on the return but we finally made it home before cut off time.

No where near the front but still finished and didn’t time out so I’d call that a win for our first ever time racing a UTV.

Massive thanks to the crew and all the businesses that helped us get here. Time to start prepping for next year!

Luckily we can rebuild them in most cases and bring them back to new condition.

Mick brought his TD42 in for a tune after fitting one of our 18G turbos and a 12mm pump from another shop. When we ran it up on the dyno we could see there was some major issues so the pump was removed and stripped for inspection.

Upon inspecting the pump we found a mismatch of incorrect and non genuine parts and while it was a 12mm pump it was not capable of delivering the power he was after so the pump was rebuilt to our 11mm 200hp spec.

Back on the dyno the clutch decided it didn’t want to hold on at 650nm so we stopped there until it can be replaced.

Make sure you do your research before handing over your hard earned for custom car parts guys. There is no textbook way to build a performance injector pump for a TD but there is certainly a few ways that just don’t work.

This is why we always recommend replacing injectors on your TD42 if fitting a new pump or before getting a tune. These injectors had done around 200,000ks and the car was running fine but with higher than average fuel consumption. The factory crack pressure spec is 110bar, this means no fuel should pass through the injector below this pressure. As you can see this injector is beginning to dribble fuel at 80bar. Diesel sprayed in this manner will not combust, it is just being wasted. Customer has reported significant fuel savings since changing the injectors.

Another ZD30 patrol in for a ALPHA TECH #superstorm ECU.

These are not just a plug in chip, they are a piggyback ECU which is hardwired into the car. We use Motorsport grade EFI crimps to splice in the harness then cover each join with dual wall heat shrink to ensure a fault free connection. The superstorm ECU is then mounted high and dry above the glove box. Also fitted with a 2 tune select switch to allow on the fly switching between tunes.

We then fitted a Tillix Performance and Tuning boost control kit to control the turbo boost to 26psi before putting it on the dyno for a custom tune.

Tech Tips:

A quick look into installing our TD42 performance manifold stud kits.

Step 1.
Insert the stud 2 turns into the head and apply a bead of anti-seize assembly lubricant to the stud. Wind the stud in another 3 turns.

Step 2.
Fit the manifold and gaskets to the studs and attach the nuts finger tight.

Step 3.
Hold the nut with a spanner and wind the stud in with a hex key until flush with the nut then nip up the nut with the spanner.

Step 4.
Torque studs to 45nm

The finished product will have the studs protruding 1-2 threads from the nut.

Brads GU first came to us for a tune a couple of months ago. With the stock injector pump at its limits it was still only able to make 143HP. The car has returned to us now to have the stock injector pump swapped out for one of our 11mm performance pumps. Now pumping out 210HP with 600NM of torque. It’s a common misconception that you need a 12mm pump to make good power. We are proving time and time again lately that the 11mm is fine for 200hp and actually drives nicer than most 12s with less rattle and less soot.

Running 22psi boost with a peak AFR of 19:1

A change of scenery from the usual TD42 patrols we see. This ZD30 patrol in to have an Alpha Tech Super Storm ECU fitted and tuned with a 2 tune select switch. Possible fuel pump issue was letting it down a little but still managed almost double the stock power. The super storm is a great bit of gear as it allows full live tuning capabilities as opposed to your traditional remaps which have been used in the past.

hi thomas i chacing the injector line clamps i think what it called ,it is to separate lines n prevent vibration breaking lines,similar to petrol engine that use plastic clips to hold disributer leads together ,thanks thomas in advance

The one on the right is a well-known brand thermostat for a TD42T the one on the left is a dayco for a TD42T as you can see the difference in the height of the two this would more than likely explain why all of a sudden my card developed overheating problems. Thanks to your article in unsealed 4X4 I worked out very quickly what the problem was.
I have a problem with a fairly new Gu power steering pump on my Gq, I have been told that there is no difference between a Gq and a Gu pump but I am wondering if there is because at speeds at over 8ok it pushes the fluid past the lid, or is there a pypass valve or pressure valve that could be playing up on a new pump ? Driving me made needing to stop all the time to check or top up

Thomas does a great job and is the most approachable person, has a massive amount of knowledge, is happy to give you his time to talk about your car and he listens to what you have to say, which is hard to come by these days especially with all the arrogance I’ve been encountering in the industry! I took the work ute up to hotham and I am very impressed. A big thank you to Diesel pump Caboolture for the wicked injector pump Kens time and support! RMS performance engineering and JS dyno Wagga Wagga for their awesome job tuning, wealth of knowledge and awesome work. David and Cory Daly for helping me get there along the way with many late nights who both also run Diesel pump Caboolture and I must say we love them and recommend them to everyone.
Best undercarpet heat insulation Based on your experience ? Must be able to be removed as its going to get wet. Not a fan of the stick in tar backed foil like dynamat etc. Cheers.
