Check out this poster developed by the RTA in 1993! 🚗

🕰️ 30 years later, the message remains the same.

Always stay under the speed limit. The faster you go, the more you increase your risk of having a crash, as well as the risk of death or serious injury.

Walgett Highway Patrol detect 81 year-old woman from Lightning Ridge travelling at 104 km/h on Fox Street in Walgett.

About 4:00 pm on Friday (21 April 2023), officers attached to Walgett Highway Patrol detected a Kia SUV travelling on Fox Street, south of Bate Street in Walgett. The vehicle’s speed was checked at 104 km/h, and still accelerating, in the 50 km/h zone.

Police stopped the 81 year-old woman from Lightning Ridge, who stated “What do I have to pull over for?”.

The Lightning Ridge woman was issued a penalty notice for:
• Class A Motor Vehicle Exceed Speed Limit >45km/h (Radar).

The offence carries a monetary penalty of $2616, and 12 demerit points (double demerit provisions).

Despite the woman refusing to sign paperwork, her licence was immediately suspended for a period of 6 months, with a further excess demerit point suspension to follow.

The number plates on the vehicle were also confiscated for a period of 3 months, and a notice issued whereby the vehicle can no longer be used during the confiscation period.

Remember, Operation ANZAC Day 2023 will be in force from Friday 21 April 2023, with double demerit points in place until 11.59 pm on Tuesday 25 April 2023, coinciding with the end of the school holidays and ANZAC Day.

Police will be targeting high-risk behaviours such as excessive speed, alcohol and drug driving offences, illegal use of mobile phones and not wearing seatbelts.
