About 12:50pm on Sunday 29th March 2020 police from Blue Mountains HWP sighted a Toyota Landcruiser travelling east on the Great Western Highway at Blaxland, towing another Landcruiser on a car carrier trailer. Believing the trailer to be exceeding its carrying capacity (GVM) police stopped and spoke with the 21 year old male driver as he entered the 7/11 service station.
A check of the trailers compliance plate showed the tailer to weigh 620kg, with a load capacity of 1380kg. The trailers combined maximum weight (GVM) is 2000kg. The Landcruiser being towed has a tare weight of 2000kg, plus accessories fitted would add substantially to its total weight. The laden weight of the trailer was at least 2620kg, well above its allowed maximum. The driver told police he thought it was ok as the loas was below his vehicles towing capacity, but he had not considered the GVM of the trailer.
He was given a direction to unload the trailer and issued a penalty notice exceed maximum weight, $457 and 3 Demerit Points.
