Mini Wiring and Fuses.

Fuse rating and wire sizes better explained.

We often see Minis and other British Cars with Burnt or melted wires in the Loom. There are only two fuses in a Classic Mini wiring system for protection and they are both rated at 35 Amps one is for Main supply circuits and one for Ignition controlled circuits. These Fuses are rated so high because there are more than one circuit running off each fuse. On a Mini the park lights and headlights are not even controlled by any fuses. Only a few models had a separate in line fuse “solely” for the rear taillights which is usually found tucked under the Firewall blanket somewhere near the Clutch and Brake Master Cylinders ‘when used’ in the system.
Now, the wires for these circuits are mainly 3 mm wire which are rated to be able to carry up to 15 Amps. When there is a short circuit, the wires get to flow up to 35 Amps through them to feed the short Circuit until the fuse blows and this can sometimes take longer because of the Voltage drop caused by the length of the wire in Question. This is where the system is wrong and unsafe and that is why wires melt. Separating each Circuit and using Fuse boxes with multiple fuses is always a better idea, then you can also use lower amperage fuses of say 15 Amps or lower according to the Circuit’s demand.
Another thing we often see is Alternator Main Wires with signs of them having been hot and close to melted. Cars fitted with a Generator / Dynamo also have lower amperage wiring as a generator only charges about 22 Amps at full output when regulator works properly. When Changing from Dynamo to an Alternator this wiring will also need to be upgraded to carry what ever the rated output of the Alternator is, for example you can not pass 45 Amps through a 25 amp cable, this will also result in Heat in Cable. Another thing I always like to add is a Fusible Link on the Battery cable to the Alternator. This protects the system and the Alternator in case the battery is accidentally connected back to front (opposite polarity). May I also say a fuse should always be installed closest to the Power Source. I would always advice to consult a professional to carry our electrical work on your car when you are not sure of what you are doing. Letting the smoke out of a Lucas wiring system might end up a more expensive job to have repaired.
