The Simpson Car Club was formed in May 1969, but it took another five years before the first race meeting was ever held. The chosen site for this new found complex was to be a disused Gravel Pit 12km’s northeast of the Simpson township, the site of the current track and complex today! In the early stages of design members decided on a
different track shape that would be challenging for drivers. Initial earthworks got underway during Easter 1971 and by November 1972 the main construction of the track and spectator facilities had taken place. Further work was carried out to get the complex up to race readiness. The first ever race meeting was held at Simpson Speedway on Sunday the 24th of March 1974. The track was opened at midday before a giant crowd, by MLA for Polwarth Mr. Daytime race meetings were held as continual improvements to the complex were made over the years. A much safer concrete fence replaced the ageing wooden barrier and construction was completed by May of 1984, in all taking 2 years to complete. A major decision to move from daytime events to night racing saw the Speedway conduct it’s first show under lights in 1987, a move which has been the most significant in the Club’s 47 year history. That has proved to be by far most beneficial for competitors and spectators alike. Since 1987 the Simpson Car Club Inc. has not looked back, continual upgrades to facilities include a relocation of the pit area, a lighting upgrade, general improvements to the spectator bank and the amenities, and during the Winter and Spring of 2007 an extension to the Clubroom facilities with an undercover Presentation / Barbeque area being added. Camping is permitted at the complex. Facilities are limited. No open fires permitted during race season.
