Our last Wednesday Night race results and report from Essington St and with many thanks for their support and work through the past few years, Shane and Dave T have done it again
race report
What a colossal night. It was a very fitting end to Way2Fast in its current location. Banter, controversy, shouting, sausages and close racing were all on display. Dave P walked in late and said that people were clearly having too much fun, to which Paul K replied, ‘Yeah, that’s why the shop’s closing’. In fact the racing was so close, and the pressure so high, that Dave P had a blood nose during his first heat. He kept racing of course. The result in the Carrera 1/24 class was extraordinary. Dave T had a superfast car that looked unbeatable, but Stretch was catching fast. In his final heat Stretch pushed into the lead by half a lap, sealing the victory. Or so he thought. It turned out that there was a glitch in the timing system so we had to re-run the heat. In typical fashion, Stretch won by even more in the second running of the heat. But the amazing part was that his spur gear had been coming loose throughout the race and it’s a wonder the car was driveable, let alone able to win – twice. On to BRMs, and some of the closest racing this correspondent has ever seen. Michael and Shane had an epic battle, Nick, Dave P, Jason L and Dave T had a series of battles, in some cases all four cars were side by side. Paul K in his orange Alpha was battling Stretch in his custom green Gemini (it was agreed by a panel of experts that the colour was actually ‘Gemini green’). In the heat of the moment Paul K had some issues with the marshalling but it was soon pointed out to him that no sheep stations were at stake. Steve thought he might not drive, but a popular vote brought him to the track and it may well have been Way2Fast employee of the month March 2017 (Mitch) that manned the BBQ while he did. We finished the night with Group 5, only interrupted by an excellent sausage sandwich or two. Laurie raced Steve’s very sporty looking VW and Jason K raced a not very Group 5 looking Sierra. Otherwise it was your usual Sideways Lancias, BMWs, Capris and Mustangs. Mitch’s car completely shed its front wheels at one point. In one heat the power went out at the start and the cars dribbled under the timing gantry. It appeared Les’ car was shorting the track. Problem was soon solved but it was amusing to watch drivers starting the next heat without full confidence in the track. All up it was a great night. Terrific to see some old friends again. We hope Steve has a well-deserved break and we are looking forward to the next chapter of Way2Fast. There is already talk of a fill-in Wednesday night series on some home tracks, so watch this space for more slotting news.
