There's a lookout at Carnarvon Gorge that most visitors never reach.

Meet Battleship Spur. Here's what you need to know:

🏔️ The trail starts at the end of the main walking track, just before Big Bend campground. Rock-hop through boulder-lined Boowinda Gorge before an orange marker points you up and out.

🏔️ Exiting Boowinda Gorge is the steepest section, but don't get too excited. You've still got a few kilometres of rocky country between you and the summit.

🏔️ The track fades in and out in places, but tree markers help keep you on course. There are sections of waist-high grass too, so wear long pants and bring a snake bite kit.

🏔️ There's a steel ladder to help up one of the rockier sections. Once you reach it, you're nearly there.

🏔️ At the top, over 1,000m above sea level, you're rewarded with sweeping views back over the Gorge and out to the distant ranges. What looks like a crack in the landscape from up here is the gorge itself.

🏔️ Doing it in one hit from the Visitor Centre is a monster 28km+ day. The smarter play: walk in and camp at Big Bend on day one, tackle Battleship Spur on day two, walk out on day three. Hard, but sane.

🏔️ Sunrise from Battleship Spur is something else. You'll almost certainly have it to yourself.

It started as a log in a paddock. The artist Michael Gibson was out in the paddock when he found a log. To him, the curve of it looked like the tail of a goanna, and that single likeness was enough to start the work. It became 'Can you see what I see', the steel goanna now on display along Bungil Creek.

'Can you see what I see' won the Origin Energy's Open Acquisitive Prize and the Roma on Bungil Gallery People's Choice Award winner for this year's exhibition. The judges and the public both agreed on the same work.

The title is also the question the piece asks. The goanna's gaze is fixed on something past the edge of the sculpture, something you cannot see. Up close, the body is woven from steel rod, open enough to let the light through, while the head is worked solid and still.

As with so many works along the trail, they are best seen in person. A photograph does not quite do them justice.

A lot of work goes into bringing these events to us and a big thank you must go to all of the tireless workers who help behind the scenes and to those wonderful local supporters who come along to events such as Injune In June - without you coming along and spending your money locally we wouldn’t have these events and facilities in our town. 🥰🥰🎉🎉
