For those of you who are interested, this is my latest video. In it I talk about swirl, tumble, and squish. It's an introductory video, that will followed up later by some more in-depth technical videos.

In this video I look at swirl, tumble and squish in the cylinder. I introduce what they are, what they do, and how they affect combustion in both spark ignit...

So, I had a phone call about a Subaru that had blown a spark plug out. Spark plug repairs are a semi regular repair that I do. I always inspect the cylinder before and after the job with a bore scope, just in case it is already damaged before I start the job, and to make sure that there is no debris left in the cylinder after I have finished. This Subaru justifies my diligence. It has eaten something, prior to me seeing the vehicle. There is significant signs of damage to the cylinder head, the cylinder bore, and the piston. There is also engine oil puddling in the bottom of the bore, so it appears that the ring seal is suboptimal. After discussion with the client, he still wanted the spark plug thread repair undertaken, because he would need it done anyway during the engine rebuild.

So, i was fortunate enough to be able to visit Rosco McGlashan and see his Aussie Invader 5R World Land Speed Record challenger car. Built in his shed, on the side of his house, it's designed to exceed 1000mph or 1600kph. The car is complete, and ready for final testing, prior to making record attempts.
Rosco already holds the Australian land speed record of over 800 kmh, and his previous car exceeded 600mph. The major constraint at the moment is the lack of a sponsorship funding for the final stages. You can help Rosco just by buying his book off Amazon. It's a great read, I have my own copy, or if you have the resources, a major sponsorship deal could put your name on the car.
The power output of the rocket motor is equivalent to 200 000hp. More than an F35 jet. If you can, read some of the details. The wheels will be subjected to 50 000 G's, whilst doing 10 000 rpm. Some of the other statistics are equally mind blowing.
Currently, there are no other teams actively trying to break the World Land Speed Record. All of the other potential challengers have fallen by the wayside for various reasons.
There are a number of photos of Rosco's previous cars, and his previous successful attempts, along with some of the iterations of the project. Just remember that you are looking at the most powerful car in the world, the most technologically advanced car of its type, and, until it runs, potentially the fastest car ever built.

So the boys had a bad day. Last thing on a Friday afternoon, they were trying to get an injector seat washer out of a cylinder head, using a tapered file. Of course, it broke, because it was late Friday afternoon. Anyway, I get the phone call to remove it. So I make a custom removal tool. 1/2" inside diameter, reducing to 8mm diameter at the seat washer face. The file had broken off about 3mm below the washer face. I set up my welding guide/removal tool, and proceed to build up the end of the file, until it reached the removal tool, and then welded it into the removal tool. I could then gently work it out with axial and kinetic force.
As you can see, I got it out. Then I could proceed with removing the seat washer, which I had to machine out. Once I got home, I machined the end off my tool so I could inspect my weld. Feel free to try welding the centre of an 8mm rod, 200mm down hole, through a 1/2" hole, with aluminium and copper around your subject piece, which is only 8mm in diameter, without doing any damage to the seat washer or the cylinder head.

Recently I made a video describing the differences between a Ford Cleveland 4V closed chamber head and the Australian 302 Cleveland closed chamber head. This video will be part of a series of videos describing the differences between different cylinder head designs and how those differences affect your camshaft selection criteria.

In this video, we compare a 4V Cleveland closed chamber head to an Australian 302 Cleveland closed chamber head. there are a number of differences outside of...

So the other day I got my hands on an unmolested Holley Strip Dominator manifold. A couple of hours later I'm in a workshop where a 2.3L Ecoboost is sitting on the floor. I couldn't help but show the younger generation the differences between a 4V Cleveland intake port, and today's engines
