Out next stop was the adorable village of Luss on the banks of Loch Lomond in the Trossachs National Park. We drove around the Loch, visiting Loch Katrine and The Lodge Forest Visitor Centre where we finally managed to see some red squirrels. It's no wonder international visitors love Australia - our wildlife is abundant and easy to spot. Wallabies, kangaroo, wombat, echidna, platypus, emus, koalas, and crocs can all be spotted in the wild. Here native wildlife is more elusive. I'd love to have seen a badger, hedgehog or fox. I did see 1 puffin and the squirrels, it got to the stage where I was excited to see sheep. Highland cows were also not as plentiful as Scottish merchandise would imply, in fact I reckon Tassie would rival them for numbers.

The NC500 certainly does not have the monopoly when it comes to eye-popping, scenic drives. The drive from Skye to Fort William was breath taking. Fort William is nestled at the foot of Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the British Isles. Blessed again with beautiful weather we took the Nevis Range Mountain Gondola on a 15 minute ride up Aonach Mór to the 650m high top station to marvel at the view. Here people hiked, rode the many mountain bike trails or simply jumped off 🫣 (paraglider). We visited Glenfinnan Viaduct and watched the Jacobite Train (Harry Potter's Hogwarts Express) cross, the Jacobite Memorial and Neptune's Staircase - a flight of 8 locks on the Caledoniam Canal just out of Fort William. Travelling on to Oban we drove the spectacular Glencoe mountainous pass in both directions. It was packed, all car parks at all viewing points chockers. Oban is a delightful seaside village and the departure port for many ferries heading across to the Inner and Outer Hebridean Islands.

Well it wouldn't be an authentic Scottish holiday without some true "Scottish Summer" weather (to be fair we've had a very good run). We crossed over the sea to Skye where the next 2 days were totally dreich (surely only the Scots require a special word for miserable, grey, wet weather?). We'd based ourselves centrally in Portree intending to drive 2 scenic loops over the coming days. Accompanying low cloud and mist further reduced visibility and finally on day 2 we bit the bullet and ventured out but unfortunately couldn't see much. Something had also gone awry with my accommodation planning because we found ourselves without a washing machine and out of clean un**es. Apart from caravan parks I've never used a public laundrette but that's what I was now faced with. Thanks to Google I found a laundry at the Portree Hostel. The night before we did a recognisance mission and first thing the following morning we were there ready to go. As I returned from getting change from the Hostel Reception I was annoyed to find some woman had rushed in and pipped me at the post, filling both of the only 2 operational machines 😤. "Sorry" she said not sounding very sincere. She asked if I was visiting and suggested I try some new machines just installed at the Portree Co Op. So off we went - me with £30 in £1 coins I no longer needed. It was absolutely "pishing it doon" and the Wash Me outdoor laundry was in the carpark. I put a load of darks in the 20kg machine for £11 and a load of whites in the 9kg machine for £9. It then cost me £10 for the dryer (Total = AUD$ 57.40 for laundry 😲 Crikey!) In the meantime I got completely "drookit" (soaked) chasing the washing from the car. A lesson to be more careful in future. Skye is a very popular tourist destination and Portree was packed with people lining up outside restaurants and hotels waiting for a table for dinner. Local establishments were making the most of this situation we discovered when checking some menus - £58 for a maincourse of scallops, £45 for an aged sirloin steak or £48 for a rack of lamb - home is looking reasonably priced in comparison. I'm craving a Tassie lamb roast with veggies.

Words in no way can adequately describe nor photos honestly portray the rugged beauty of the Scottish Highlands on the NC500 West Coast. Waterfalls tumbling into raging streams feeding dark glassy lochs. Rugged slopes smothered in blooming heather and ferns speckled with sheep. A visual feast that accosts the senses. A conversation with an American couple early in our trip had me concerned. "The NC500"" they told us was a road so dreadful they'd hired a driver to take them around. Bumper to bumper motorhomes, motorbikes and bicycles. Luckily we had none of that. There were the odd hair-raising, white-knuckled single lane segments Steve claimed was like driving on a slot car track but I was too busy soaking up the stunning views. From Thurso to Kinlochbervie, Ullapool and Skye we had 3 days driving including the dreaded Drumbeg Loop. I didn't have the heart to test Steve with bealach na ba (Applecross Pass) after that. He'd done very well and I think he'd had enough 😂

It was time to tackle the far North remote Scottish Highlands on the NC500, a scenic 500 mile loop return to Inverness. Research had suggested we travel anticlockwise due to the best scenery being on the West Coast so we headed for Thurso. The first stop was Dornoch Beach which reminded me of home, a vast sandy beach with virtually no one on it and the sea beautifully calm. Dunrobin Castle was just up the road with its self-guided audio tour, beautiful gardens, falconry display and Scottish soup lunch. We called into the quaint fishing village of Helmsdale then on to Duncansby Stacks (where I saw my first and only puffin) and John O Groats for the signpost photo to go with the one taken at the other end of the country at Land's End, Cornwall - 874 mile. Our BnB was a coverted Church Manse tastefully decorated in the Scottish "heilan coo" theme. The following day we took the ferry to the Orkney Islands for a guided day tour visiting uncovered village ruins from the Neolithic Age at Skara Brae and the ancient Ring of Brodgar, a henge and stone circle estimated to have been built between 2500 and 2000BC - mind blowing.
