On this day, 23 August (1948), Jose Paronella, of Paronella Park in far North Queensland, died of cancer aged 60. Jose arrived in Australia in 1913 and with his wife, Margarita, they laboured to bring to life his dream – a pleasure garden with swimming areas and lush green gardens. In 1935, Paronella Park was officially opened to the public. Many visitors continue to enjoy the gardens to this day. Their graves were originally in Innisfail Cemetery, but the original headstones (pictured) were moved to their home in Paronella Park, Mena Creek. A testament to a dream. Jardine Ferry on target to open May 23rd

✅PUBLIC NOTICE - UPDATE: Jardine Ferry Safety Repairs on Target ✅12/5/25
Northern Peninsula Area Regional Council (NPARC) confirms safety repairs to the Jardine River Ferry are progressing on target in line with maintenance closure period from 23 April to 23 May 2025.

Continued rainfall, and persistently high-water levels at the Jardine River crossing, has prevented public access – providing a suitable window for the contractor to safely progress the works without disruption from river traffic.

Council reports that the ferry maintenance project is progressing steadily. Despite the wet conditions, the contractor has maintained strong safety and compliance standards - ensuring the vessel is safe and operational for future use.

NPARC continues to work closely with the contractor to meet the project timeline. A recent independent safety review confirmed appropriate measures are in place, with Council satisfied works are delivered to a high standard.

Council thanks the community for its ongoing patience and understanding and will provide further updates as we move closer to the anticipated ferry crossing reopening.
