“It’s not a major problem.” Then we removed the engine. 😅

It looks dramatic, but there’s a reason behind it.

This BMW X3 with the N57 3.0L diesel engine came in for timing chain work. As these engines age and accumulate kilometres, timing chain wear can become an issue and may lead to abnormal noise and, if left to deteriorate, more serious engine problems.

The challenging part is the location.

On the N57, the timing chain system is positioned at the rear of the engine, making access a much bigger job than many owners might expect. For this X3, the engine was removed so the three timing chains, guides and tensioners could be properly replaced.

But once the engine was out, we found something else.

There were also signs of oil leakage around the Oil Filter Housing / Oil Cooler area.

Since the engine was already removed, it made sense to address the confirmed leak at the same time rather than leave it and potentially pay for significant labour again later.

That doesn’t mean replacing everything simply because “we’re already in there.”

Our approach is to identify what actually needs attention, explain why, and use the opportunity to address confirmed issues where it genuinely saves the owner from duplicated labour later.

Sometimes a repair looks much scarier than the problem itself.

What matters is understanding why it needs to come apart, what we find once it does, and what actually needs to be repaired.

This vehicle was recently purchased second-hand and brought to GM Auto for an inspection.

Once on the hoist, we found visible corrosion across several areas underneath the vehicle.

Rust doesn’t automatically mean there is a serious problem. Some surface corrosion is common as vehicles age. What matters is where the corrosion is, how advanced it is, and whether any structural or important components are affected.

That’s why a proper used-car inspection is about understanding the overall condition — not simply seeing rust and recommending repairs.

If you’re buying a used vehicle, check its history and service records, and consider a pre-purchase inspection if you’re unsure about its condition.

“I don’t want to do any of those. Just keep it basic and affordable.”

That was the response we received after showing this customer the results of his vehicle inspection.

He came to GM Auto with his wife and child for a routine service, and from the beginning, he made one thing clear — he wanted to keep the cost as low as possible.

After completing the service and inspection, we found a few things that needed attention:

The tyres were showing significant wear, the brake pads were getting thin, and some of the filters were due for attention.

His first reaction was simple: leave everything for now.

Later, we learned that the family had only recently arrived in Australia. With a young child and plenty of new expenses, we completely understood why every dollar mattered.

So instead of saying “replace everything”, we worked through the priorities with him.

The brake pads were worn, but not at the point where they needed immediate replacement — so we explained what to watch for and recommended monitoring them.

The filters could also wait.

The tyres were different.

With the level of wear we found, and considering how much wet weather we get on the Gold Coast, we didn’t recommend leaving them as they were. Rather than replacing all four at once, where appropriate based on the actual tyre condition and vehicle requirements, we discussed prioritising the two that needed attention most.

That’s what we mean by helping a customer manage their budget.

It’s not about replacing everything. But it’s also not about making a job cheaper by ignoring something that could affect safety.

With the colder weather lately, we also carried out a battery health check at no additional charge.

Sometimes good vehicle maintenance is simply about knowing what needs attention now, what can wait, and where you shouldn’t compromise.
