A lithium conversion is about much more than simply removing the old batteries and installing new ones. At RONIC Caravan And RV, we look at the complete charging system to make sure your new lithium battery bank is being charged correctly, safely and efficiently. 🔧⚡

🔋 WHAT’S INVOLVED IN A PROPER LITHIUM CONVERSION?

When converting a caravan to lithium, we assess:

✅ Battery capacity & configuration – Ah capacity, series/parallel configuration and the battery’s internal BMS (Battery Management System).

✅ AC lithium battery charger – Your mains charger must have a suitable LiFePO₄ charging profile or be configurable to the battery manufacturer’s specifications.

✅ Solar MPPT controller ☀️ – Your solar regulator needs to be correctly programmed for lithium rather than simply continuing to use an AGM or lead-acid profile.

✅ DC-DC charging 🚐 – If your caravan is being charged from the tow vehicle, the charging system needs to be suitable for lithium and correctly current-limited.

✅ Correct charging voltages & parameters – Absorption, float, charge current and other settings need to match the specific battery manufacturer’s requirements. Different lithium batteries can have different requirements, so we don’t simply assume that one setting suits every battery. (Victron Energy⁠)

✅ Cabling, fusing & protection – Lithium batteries can accept significantly higher charging and discharge currents, so cable sizing, fusing, isolation and connections need to be checked as part of the installation.

One of the biggest advantages of lithium is the amount of usable energy you can get from your battery bank.

Lithium batteries can provide a much larger proportion of their rated capacity as usable energy compared with traditional lead-acid batteries, while also offering excellent cycle life when correctly charged and managed.

🧠 IT’S ALL ABOUT THE RIGHT CHARGING PROFILE

Lithium batteries don’t simply require “more charge” — they require the correct charging algorithm.

For example, Victron specifies different charging parameters for its LiFePO₄ batteries, including absorption and float voltages, and recommends disabling temperature compensation for its lithium batteries. The exact settings should always be checked against the battery manufacturer’s specifications. (Victron Energy⁠)
