Crew comfort starts well beyond the accommodation.
PV Equinox combines its hullform and twin keels with a VEEM VG52SD gyrostabiliser and Humphree active interceptors to manage vessel motion.
Resilient machinery mounts and flexible driveline connections also form part of its noise and vibration control approach.
Integrating these features required careful coordination of machinery, structure and onboard systems – particularly around the gyro and adjacent stern-ramp arrangement.

PV Equinox’s twin MAN (.engines) engines each deliver 1,066kW through remotely mounted ZF (.global) gearboxes. Twin Zenith Engineering () generators provide electrical redundancy, with either unit capable of supplying the vessel independently.
Dongara Marine integrated the machinery, exhausts, and pipework – working with Pages Electrical Services for electrical – to meet challenging installation constraints while also providing access for inspection and maintenance.
The installation brings together propulsion performance and the practical requirements of operating a vessel on extended patrols.

Inside PV Equinox’s wheelhouse, navigation, surveillance, and vessel controls come together around the operators.
For example, Teledyne FLIR thermal and visual camera imagery supports observation, while a Marex 3D joystick control integrates the main propulsion and bow thruster for slow-speed manoeuvring and position holding.
An external flybridge provides a second operating position.
Dongara Marine and our specialist subcontractor Geraldton Marine Electronics worked collaboratively to integrate these systems into the vessel’s consoles, machinery spaces, and operating arrangements.

For personnel spending up to two weeks at sea, accommodation deserves close attention.
PV Equinox provides 10 berths across six cabins, a fully fitted galley and shared mess, with air conditioning supporting the onboard environment.
Custom joinery brings together storage, appliances, and everyday amenities throughout the accommodation.
These spaces show another side of Dongara Marine’s boatbuilding capability: detailed interior fit-out tailored to how people will live and work aboard.

Extended patrols need more than fuel capacity.
PV Equinox was designed for voyages of up to 14 days and a range of 1,000 nautical miles at its 20-knot service speed.
A Stella Marine watermaker produces up to 240 litres of fresh water per hour, while food storage, laundry facilities, and an onboard workshop support daily life and maintenance away from port.
Integrating these services is an essential part of turning an offshore vessel into a sustained patrol platform.

PV Equinox’s patrol capability extends beyond the main vessel.
Dongara Marine also built its custom 5.5-metre aluminium RIB, powered by a Mercury SeaPro outboard, for inspections, boardings and other work away from the patrol boat.
A central stern ramp and twin hydraulic transom doors provide launch, recovery and stowage.
Building both vessels allowed the seaboat and its handling arrangement to be developed together around DPIRD’s requirements.

Built in Geraldton for Western Australia’s northern waters.
PV Equinox is a 24.95-metre aluminium fisheries patrol vessel built by Dongara Marine for the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development / Fisheries WA.
Designed by Southerly Designs in collaboration with our team, Equinox was extensively customised for extended offshore patrols from Broome.
Over the coming posts, we’ll share the spaces, equipment, and construction details that bring this purpose-built vessel together.
